Tips for Students Needing Financial Help for College (including Homeless)
Some of you are helping students in need get to college - I got these tips from a friend who works at the college level for my friend who took in a student who was without parental help for college and had become her guardian. I think these are great tips others can use as well - Efamily please read and share! Some good tips for ANY STUDENT!!
Here is a checklist
1. Get a copy of her unofficial transcripts from her high school—the student can get a copy from her counselor. Must determine if she has met all of the requirements to graduate
2. Contact the Financial Aid office Director at the colleges that she is interested in to inform them of her plight (this is the only office on campus who knows who is “homeless or foster care”)
3. Student can request a waiver to take the ACT or SAT—she should have at least one more opportunity to test before the Fall semester.
4. Apply to the colleges ASAP.
5. If she is a good student and has her heart set on one college in particular—contact the Academic Provost directly (ally and champion)—schedule a meeting to discuss her special circumstance—homeless
6. Encourage her to take the ASVAB—military test. She may be interested in join the reserves which will pay for most or all of college depending on her test scores and the job she chooses. And because she serves in the state of Texas, the Hazelwood Act may pay for her to go to grad school. She can drill one weekend a month and get top notch training
7. Once admitted to college, have the student to sign a FERPA waiver so that you will know what is going on with her academically

Efamily member shares re Taraji Henson film & GoFundMe for Churches burned in Louisiana
See Taraji P. Henson and Sam Rockwell starring in "The Best of Enemies." This is a strange but true story - the film does not show KKK brutality but chooses instead to show how a two-week-long charrette (a series of meetings) of ordinary citizens can be used to resolve racial conflicts and decide whether the schools should do the right thing and be integrated. Racism, disgusting as it is, truly is a mask for fear and ignorance.
[Many municipalities around the world develop long-term city plans or visions through multiple charrettes - both communal and professional.]
https://blaccatl.com/2019/04/02/:
The true story of the unlikely relationship between Ann Atwater, an outspoken civil rights activist, and C.P. Ellis, a local Ku Klux Klan leader. During the racially charged summer of 1971, Atwater and Ellis come together to co-chair a community summit/charrette on the desegregation of schools in Durham, N.C. The ensuing debate and battle soon lead to surprising revelations that change both of their lives forever.

1) APRIL 4 Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Opelousas, La. An overnight fire had consumed the church’s interior; smoke rose through a gaping hole in the roof that had sheltered congregants for generations. Mount Pleasant became the third predominantly black church to burn down in Louisiana’s St. Landry Parish in the span of 10 days, setting local residents on edge.
2) On March 26, flames reduced St. Mary Baptist Church in Port Barre to rubble.
3) And on April 2, a blaze struck the Greater Union Baptist Church in Opelousas.
A white sheriff deputy's 21-year-old son, Holden Matthews, was arrested 4/10/19 and charged on three arson counts in connection with three racially-motivated church burnings in St. Landry Parish that have frightened black communities. Matthews was planning more fires.

Review of Movie "Little" - my daughter said it was awesome! Efamily member shares her thoughts too...
The Movie "Little" led all newcomers, delivering an estimated $15.5 million in its debut, for a second place finish. Men too are loving this feel-good movie, much to the delight of Universal!
Marsai Martin, 14-year-old African-American actress, is the star and executive producer of the recently released “Little,” the youngest person in Hollywood ever to executive produce a studio film. "Little" is an original, star-and-concept-driven, comedy produced, written and directed by African-American women, with Black female costume designers.
In addition to the three Black leads, it took the combined might of two other black women to get the project off the ground: director Tina Gordon and “Girls Trip” screenwriter Tracy Oliver.
Even in Hollywood's increasingly diverse climate, it is a rare feat for five black women to have the opportunity to work together in major roles both in front of and behind the camera.
The movie has wonderful lessons addressing bullying, friendship, running a business, etc.
Martin pitched the movie idea when she was just 10 (!) years old and on hiatus from the first season of ABC’s “Black-ish,” on which she plays Diane. She fired her personal agents when they laughed at her movie idea. Great lesson for our young girls.
The comedy centers on a mean, bullying, tech mogul, played by Regina Hall, who is thrown for a loop when she awakes one morning as her 13-year-old self. Martin plays the teen, co-starring with Hall and Issa Rae, the bullied assistant.
cnbc.com:
Martin, who signed a production deal earlier this year with Universal Pictures, says that “Little” is one of several films that she plans to create and star in. Her first project with Universal and her company, Genius Productions, will be “StepMonster,” a comedy about a girl adjusting to life with a new step mother.
“Marsai is a star on the rise,” Universal Pictures president Peter Cramer told The Hollywood Reporter. “She is not only tremendously talented in front of the camera but offers a unique perspective as a creator and producer that will resonate with all audiences.”

The musical "Hamilton" is getting rave reviews from the critics and public ! Hamilton received a record-setting 16 nominations in 13 categories at the Broadway 70th Annual Tony Awards, held on June 12, 2016, ultimately winning 11 total. Rather than making the Founding Fathers in this story of American history white men, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical stipulates that they must be men and women of color — any person of color. Women of color take part in the battle scenes. The producers of “Hamilton” – a rap musical that offers a fresh take on the Founding Fathers -- really did put out a casting call when the show first began production. “Seeking NON-WHITE men and women, ages 20s to 30s, for Broadway and upcoming Tours!” their casting notice read. The NON-WHITE part was in all caps. They were declared racists. So, they wrote "non-white" in lower case..
Also, the kids who attend Hamilton know the soundtrack by heart and so they know the story. Alexander Hamilton was born in the Caribbean to an unwed mother, ages, fights in the Revolutionary war against the Brits in New York as George Washington's right-hand man, goes through scandal cheating on his wife and paid blackmail money to his mistress’ husband to keep sleeping with her, wrote the Federalist papers, becomes the first U.S. treasury secretary of the new nation, helped establish the Coast Guard and the New York Post, has a son and loses the son who dies in a duel, and then Hamilton himself later dies in a duel in 1804 at the age of 47, losing to then sitting U.S. Vice President Aaron Burr, in New Jersey.
To prepare for the performance, the rhythm, the cadence, lesson learned: listen to the soundtrack before going to see the musical. I play the 2-CD soundtrack constantly in my car.......So, it's good to buy (from Amazon) the Hamilton Original Broadway Cast Recording 2- CD Soundtrack
