Astronaut Ron McNair, lost in the tragedy of Challenger, was a dear friend who was also a deacon at my home church and an inspiring role model for all. With a PhD in physics from MIT, after completing undergrad at North Carolina A&T, Ron was recruited for the Astronaut program - he was a jazz sax player (which he played in space) and a black belt in Karate (I saw him break concrete blocks at an NTA banquet where he was the speaker). Dad to Joy and Reggie-husband to Cheryl--very involved inside and outside of work...tonight his widow Cheryl, founder and CEO of the Dr. Ronald E. McNair Educational Science Literacy Foundation (DREME) will be featured on many interviews today including you may catch her on CBS Evening News, Saturday there will be an event in Lake City, SC where Joy will be the featured speaker. Keep the family in your thoughts and prayers today - it is the sacrifice of explorers like Ron that help humankind reach its destiny.

AFFORDABLE CARE ACT - IT'S THE law

January 31, 2016, is deadline for Obamacare, i.e. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), commonly called the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  Spread the word to family and friends...they may qualify for financial aid at HealthCare.gov

  • It's affordable. 8 out of 10 people who enroll in a health plan receive financial help. In fact, most people can find a health insurance plan for as little as $75 or less per month.
  • It's easy to shop and sign up. During last year’s open enrollment, it took most people only about 10 minutes to submit an application.
  • It's the law. The January 31st deadline is your last chance to avoid the penalty on your taxes of $695 or more next year.
  • Free help is available! If you have a question about HealthCare.gov, you can always call 1-800-318-2596 for personal assistance, all day and every day. The call is free. Trained enrollment specialists will provide free, personal help and share other important advice, including how to qualify for financial help, how to start an application, or how to re-enroll.

Hardin-Simmons Collge offers summer program in Healthcare Field

Health Sciences Summer Enrichment Program Accepting Applications

Program aims to give healthcare field experience

Hardin-Simmons is offering a summer program for students interested in preparing for a career in the fast-growing healthcare field. The application window recently opened for the two-week Health Sciences Summer Enrichment Program (HSSEP), which will run from June 19th to July 1st.
The program is an opportunity for high school students in 11th or 12th grade or incoming college freshmen to strengthen their skills in science and mathematics in a college environment. HSSEP aims to build confidence in student's ability to master science skills at a college level and expose students to a variety of healthcare career options.
Professor Dr. Jennifer Hennigan said the 2016 program has added HSU’s Dr. Michelle Dose, Associate Professor of Chemistry and Physics, to further enhance its chemistry offerings. In addition to hands-on tours of HSU’s Physical Therapy and Nursing facilities, the program will bring Dr. Jennifer Eames, the director of the developing Physician Assistant program at HSU, on board to share about PA careers in the Career Roundtable.
Another unique feature of the program is an ongoing relationship that develops between students and faculty.
"I’ve enjoyed continuing my relationship with HSSEP students from last year and seeing their confidence as undergraduates, and I am excited about meeting new students," Hennigan said.
In its second year, the HSSEP program at HSU prepares students with a combination of college lectures, engaging labs, and interactive sessions with health care professionals and their workplaces. Lecture and lab classes in biology, chemistry and college algebra or pre-calculus will be offered.
Last year, HSSEP campers designed and conducted their own experiment investigating microbial diversity on campus. They also dissected bovine eyes and fetal pigs in the anatomy and physiology lab to investigate how organ structures inform function. In addition, students attended a roundtable of regional health experts allowing them an in-depth look into today’s professional healthcare environment.
Upon completion of the program, students will receive quantitative feedback on their strengths and weaknesses.
Students who participated in last summer’s program say that it helped them to solidify their major in the medical field and helped them picture themselves more clearly in a health-related job. Healthcare jobs are on the rise, making them a smart choice for students with interest in the field. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of healthcare occupations is projected to grow 19 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations.
Interested students need to turn in applications by February 29th. Additional details about the program can be found on the HSSEP website: https://www.hsutx.edu/hssep

SOU

Dear Potential Sponsor,

It is my pleasure to introduce you to the SOUTH CENTRAL YOUTH BASEBALL LEAGUE; where our mission is to impart the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, and fair play to the children of the community, so that they may someday use these values in becoming good citizens. Our organization promotes life skills that are taught through the game of baseball. SCYB is led by a volunteer group of coaches, dedicated parents, and community leaders.

SCS is a small non-profit organization that does not receive any government or grant assistance. Our budget consists of cost for field rentals, permits, youth league uniforms, umpire fees and baseball equipment to name just a few. Our primary revenue streams are registration fees paid by participating families and donations received from generous individuals and local businesses. Without the support of local community businesses, we would be unable to reach the financial requirements to run SCYB. In order to make this a rewarding experience a reality for our youth, we are reaching out to you directly, by offering you and your organization the opportunity to become a league sponsor. Any sponsorship level you select will be greatly appreciated.
SPONSORSHIP LEVELS
