Rodney Ellis Buffalo Soldiers Breakfast video - supporters including our Mayor give testimonials to Re-Elect Rodney

Just got this video (link to the video at the bottom of this post) which friends are asked to share from the Precinct Chairs Breakfast last Saturday for Precinct 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis - it includes testimonials from our Mayor and others. My support for Rodney is from being up close and personal...that goes back to my teens... Rodney is my friend from college (he lived in my dorm's grad tower UT's Jester as a grad student at UT's Law School and the LBJ school (when I was an undergrad at UT), then we crossed paths in Washington, DC when he was working for Congressman Mickey Leland as his senior staffer and I was working for Congressman Eckhardt as an LBJ intern both Congressmen who worked together on legislation for our community. I met Licia Green (now Ellis' wife) when she was working in the Houston office for Mickey Leland - we go way back! Our children were in the same 1st grade class (Ms Gray the teacher had 3 girls with similar names -- my daughter Maria, LaTricia Williams's daughter Moriah, and Rodney's daughter Maria (pronounced Mariah) fond memories...and yes Rodney did read stories at storytime! (Both my Rodney and Commissioner Rodney Ellis!) Over the years Commissioner Ellis has been a strong advocate for our community and knows how to get things done! Watch him sometime on https://agenda.harriscountytx.gov/ - there are videos of prior meetings - see him in ACTION - he does not mince words when advocating for us! We need strong leadership in this position! I'm supporting Rodney the man personally and his legacy of public service! Vote Early or on March 3rd for Rodney Ellis Precinct 1 Commissioner.

Click this link for the video:

(If listening at work be sure the sound is not too loud, one supporter is quite fervent and loudly slips out the D word in his passion for supporting Rodney's re-election!)

Vote Early or on March 3 to Re-Elect Rodney Ellis!

TIME TO VOTE IN TEXAS!!! IMPORTANT INFO

Be a Texas Voter! 2/18-2/28 is primary election early voting! Make your voice heard in EVERY election.

https://www.harrisvotes.com/Docs/EarlyVotingPDFMaps/EV%20Schedule_March%202020

Hours of Operation

February 24th - February 28th
7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Who should vote in the Texas Primaries?

The upcoming Texas primary is an extremely important election in Texas!

Voters in the Texas primaries and conventions choose who will run for office in the General Election. For many communities in Texas, their elected officials are chosen in the primary election because many districts heavily favor one party over the other.

The Republican and Democratic Parties choose their candidates in a primary election. The Libertarian and Green Parties choose their candidates in party conventions.

Texas has open primaries. That means that ALL Texas voters can participate in one of these events.

Voters who don’t strongly identify with any political party can and should carefully consider the choices and participate in one of the primaries or conventions. But you can only
participate in one. Once a voter has voted in one party, that voter cannot participate in another party’s election or convention.

Scholarships - Greater Houston Frontiers Club Deadline March 13

SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE FOR ALL MINORITY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Info below from the website - http://www.ghfrontiers.com/2020-application---get-started.html cut and paste the web address if the link does not work.
GHFC Scholarship Program
Scholarships are awarded to a small number of students every year. Our goal is to help college-bound students with a financial need who have demonstrated a commitment to their schools and communities.

The Greater Houston Frontiers Club (GHFC) dares students to dream big, and never stop. We not only offer education-based scholarship to make those dreams a reality, but we award students for service and leadership achievements, as well. Our scholarship program was created to benefit deserving high school graduating minority students that attend school in Harris County and there are no citizenship requirements. Since the GHFC Scholarship Program's inception in 1980, many talented students have received scholarship assistance from this organization.

The GHFC Scholar isn’t necessarily class valedictorian (though s/he can be!). We look for a good all-around student who is dedicated to his/her community, has a strong sense of service, and who demonstrates a strong work ethic across the board. Only students of the highest character will be considered.

As a part of the scholarship process, we’ll ask you to complete several questions and write an essay that shares more about who you are. A great first step in the application process is to collect all of your work, volunteering information, academic achievements and honors/awards. As you prepare your essay, you’ll need to request information from outside resources, so start early and save your results until you are ready to submit the completed application.

We award scholarships to students who will be enrolled as full-time freshman with a minimum of 12 semester hours at an accredited four-year institution, or to students who are enrolled as a freshman in an accredited two year community, technical institution with a minimum enrollment of 6 semester hours.

Four-year College or University Scholarships

Scholarships will be awarded to students who enroll as a full-time (12 hours minimum) freshman in an accredited four-year institution. The GHFC Scholarship Program is very competitive. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit, leadership qualities, interpersonal communication, academic merit, extracurricular activities, community service, written essay and financial need. The $1,000 scholarships are payable in a single installment. Scholarships will be paid upon proof of registration (official class schedule) in an accredited four-year college or university.

Community/Technical Institution Scholarships

The GHFC Scholarship Program is very competitive. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit, leadership qualities, interpersonal communication and interpersonal skills, extracurricular activities, community service, written essay and financial need. The $500 scholarships are payable in a single installment. Scholarships will be paid upon proof of registration (official class schedule) in an accredited two-year Community/Technical Institution.

#BeAnAstronaut -- Time to Apply - Pass the Word!

Do You Have What It Takes to #BeAnAstronaut? A few words from our NASA Administrator..

I am excited to announce NASA will accept applications for our next class of astronaut candidates beginning on March 2! We will need more explorers to take us forward to the Moon later this decade and farther into our solar system in the next. I believe many in NASA’s talented workforce would make excellent astronauts as part of the Artemis Generation, and I encourage you to apply.

A few new requirements must be met before applying. In addition to U.S. citizenship, NASA now requires a master’s degree in a STEM field including engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science, or mathematics from an accredited institution. And for the first time as part of the process, applicants will be required to take an online assessment that lasts up to two hours.

Even as our requirements are increasingly competitive, I have no doubt that you, or someone you know, will be among the handful of talented men and women we will ultimately choose to represent all of humanity on future spaceflight missions.

Additional details to #BeAnAstronaut including the link to apply on USAJobs will soon be available at www.nasa.gov/astronauts. If you’re eligible, I encourage you to get your resumes ready now and to apply online before the March 31 deadline.

please help us spread the word using #BeAnAstronaut on your social media channels

We need your help in finding the next generation of explorers!

Women in STEM Conference - Hawaii hosted by Arizona State

Did you know that in 2015, women made up 25% of computing-related positions but Black/African American women made up only 3% and Latina and Indigenous women made up 1% and less than 1% (respectively)? Even though Black/African American women are majoring in computer science in greater numbers, they are not entering or remaining in STEM or computer science fields at the same rates as they are graduating in those fields. Latina and Indigenous women are among the least likely to be recruited for STEM education and careers. The Center for Gender Equity in Science & Technology at Arizona State University, in partnership with Hawaii Pacific University, invites you to join us to change that.

From March 18-20, 2020 we will be in Kona, Hawaii at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel facilitating the Women of Color in STEM Entrepreneurship Conference. This event will allow industry professionals, academics, and investors to transform the field of computer science , in particular, and STEM, in general by creating strategic viable plans. During the conference we will be working together, and with the assistance of Native Hawaiian, Black, and Latina girls, to build a decade-long systems map for how to improve these numbers. We will also host a pitch competition for attendees to present strategic plans to improve diversity in STEM over the next decade. The winner will be rewarded with $4,500 in SEED money. We would be honored to have you join us. We have enclosed information related to conference registration, hotel logistics, conference agenda, speakers, and other important details for your consideration.

This airline includes the Hawaiian language, locally inspired food, as well as culturally meaningful practices in its customer service including information about tourist points of interest as well as complimentary Koloa Rum Punch for adult passengers over the age of 21 upon arrival to your destination.

Please note the conference hotels do not offer a shuttle service. You can arrange transportation to and from the hotel by taxi, ride sharing, or rental vehicle. Transportation Network Companies are allowed at Kona Airport including Lyft and Uber. Please note, you will need to download the app for these services and data/messaging may be needed to schedule services. Taxicabs are located curbside facing baggage claim areas A and B. For more information as well as taxi fare estimates, please click here . Lastly, if you prefer to have a personal vehicle during your stay, Kona airport has a generous offering of rental car agencies. You can find more information about car rental options here.

Speakers
We are pleased to present two of our conference speakers.

Kaiulani Murphy
Born and raised in Waimea and Waipiʻo Valley on the island of Hawaiʻi, Kaʻiulani Murphy developed a passion for voyaging as a Hawaiian Studies student at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Since 1998, she has served as crew with Hōkūleʻa and the Polynesian Voyaging Society, participating in voyages to Rapa Nui, Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, Micronesia and Japan, and the recent Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage. Kaʻiulani feels privileged to learn from extraordinary mentors and to share her experiences with students at Honolulu Community College and UH Mānoa where she teaches courses in Hawaiian astronomy, navigation, and voyaging.

Dr. Laurie Rousseau-Nepton
A resident astronomer at the Canada-France-Hawaii Observatory and was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Hawaii between 2017 and 2019. The first Indigenous woman in Canada to obtain a PhD in Astrophysics, she received her diploma from Université Laval by studying regions of stellar formation in spiral galaxies. Laurie Rousseau-Nepton was a FRQNT Postdoctoral Scholar, previously received the Hubert Reeves Fellowship and the Award for Native Women in Sciences of the Association des Femmes Diplômées des Universités du Québec. Dr. Rousseau-Nepton is now leading an international project called SIGNALS, aiming at observing thousands of newly born stars in galaxies close to the Milky Way to understand how their birthplace affect the rest of their life and the galaxies evolution. She is involved in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion committees for the Canadian Association of Physicists and for the Mauna Kea Observatories and is devoted in promoting a community driven way to do science.

We thank you so much for your support and interest in promoting women of color in STEM . We hope you can join us in these important conversations and invite you to tell your friends about this event. We know that achieving large scale change involves building critical capacity among advocates, mentors, peers, and friends . Without ensuring girls have equitable access to resources, classes, mentors, and educational experiences in STEM, we cannot improve the diverse landscape of STEM. As we move into the next decade, it is important to have talent in local communities to address the diverse needs of each community. This means making sure that girls have early access to opportunities that increase their knowledge and talents in computing and STEM. Your support makes a difference. We are so grateful for you and look forward to seeing you in Kona next month!
