Susan Rice in Houston Nov 4

https://www.wachouston.org copy and paste in your browser

About the Event:
Ambassador Susan Rice will recount her storied career and experiences as the National Security Advisor to President Barack Obama and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, taking the Council behind the scenes of some of the recent national security challenges including increasingly-complicated relations with Russia and China, the battle against ISIS, Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and President Donald Trump's transition to the White House.

About the Speaker:
Susan Rice is an American diplomat who served as the 24th U.S. National Security Advisor from 2013-2017, playing a key role in the coordination of intelligence and military efforts within the Middle East during her tenure. In January 2009, the U.S. Senate confirmed her nomination by former president Barack Obama as permanent Representative to the United Nations, becoming the first African American woman to serve in this position. From 2002-2009, Susan Rice was a senior fellow in Foreign Policy at the Brookings Institution, focusing on the topics of U.S. foreign policy, weak and failing states, the implications of global poverty and transnational threats to security. Rice also served as assistant secretary of African Affairs in 1997, becoming one of the youngest assistant secretaries of state in U.S. history.

Prior to assuming her duties as U.N. representative and U.S. National Security Advisor, Rice worked at the National Security Council in Washington D.C. as the director of international organizations and peacekeeping before her post as special assistant to the president and senior director for African Affairs in 1995.

Susan Rice earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Stanford in 1986, then attended the University of Oxford to earn her M.Phil and D.Phil in international relations.

Bail Reform

ear Friends,

After decades of unequal justice and a costly legal battle, Harris County is taking final steps to end its unconstitutional and unsafe misdemeanor cash bail system. Please join me, Harris County leaders and criminal justice advocates to learn about our work to replace it with a better, safer system that protects the rights of all people and our communities.

The Thurgood Marshall School of Law Civil Rights Society and Harris County Precinct One will host a panel discussion on misdemeanor bail reform this Saturday, November 2, 2019 at Texas Southern University's Thurgood Marshall School of Law at 10 am (3100 Cleburne Street, Houston, TX 77004).

Harris County's misdemeanor cash bail practices were among the most oppressive and discriminatory in the country for decades. Unfortunately, there are people intent on stopping progress to perpetuate an unjust and harmful system of mass incarceration. Bail reform opponents are using disinformation and scare tactics to mislead the public on what bail reform does and why it is needed.

We'll go over the harms of misdemeanor cash bail, the terms of the settlement agreement and tell the truth about bail reform. This is a truly historic moment for our county. It's an opportunity for Harris County to be a national leader in criminal justice reform.

Be a Voice for Equal Justice and Safe Communities

Advocates are encouraged to share their support on social media.
We need you to help set the record straight and be a leader in one of the most significant civil rights struggles of our time. This is a historic moment that stretches far beyond Harris County. Come be a part of history!

Support #BailReformNOW by joining us on Saturday. Space is limited. Please RSVP to Terrance Koontz at Terrance.Koontz@cp1.hctx.net or 346-286-1950.

NBMBAA Conference 2019 Recap

A Message From the President
Greetings:
On behalf of the Executive Board of the National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) Houston Chapter, I would like to thank everyone who volunteered for, and attended, the 2019 NBMBAA Conference in Houston! All week long I have fielded thanks and well-wishes from our out-of-town guests and the common theme they expressed was the amazing hospitality that the people of Houston shared with them.
I would like to congratulate our local volunteer coordinators, Dr. Tisha Rowe and Mr. Brian Glaude, on a job well done leading our local volunteer team to recruit a total of 1,081 eager volunteers, one of largest-ever number of volunteers recruited at an NBMBAA conference. Special thanks to our University partners from Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern University, and University of Houston-Downtown for their partnership and contribution to this figure.

One of our main goals for the conference was to leave an economic impact on Black businesses in the city. To aid in that, we released our Black Houston Guide to the conference attendees, providing visitors with recommendations of African American-owned businesses to patronize during their visit, including restaurants, nightlife, personal care services, and community-specific tourist attractions, such as The Ensemble Theatre, Buffalo Soldiers Museum, and the Houston Museum of African American Culture. Special thanks to our sponsors, CBRE, Chevron, University of Houston - CT Bauer College of Business, Waste Management, and SoLCIETI. The guide is available at www.BlackHoustonGuide.com and serves as an enduring legacy of the 2019 NBMBAA Conference to the city of Houston.

The main highlight of the conference for the Houston Chapter was winning the 2019 NBMBAA Channel Award for Entrepreneurship. This award was presented in recognition of our Pro-Bono Consulting Workshops and other entrepreneurship programs. We also had the honor of having our Pro-Bono Consulting Workshop included in the conference schedule as a community service activity with the City of Houston and the Mayor's Turnaround Entrepreneurship Program.

As we move on from a successful conference and into 2020, which marks the 50th Anniversary of the NBMBAA, the Houston chapter will place a renewed focus on our 800+ members. I invite you to join us for our next General Body Meeting (GBM) on Thursday, October 10, where we will provide updates on the chapter's progress and allow members to learn about and join our special-interest committees.
Thank you, Houston! Here's to a successful 2019 and looking forward to a ground-breaking 2020!

Regards,
R. Leigh Johnson
President, NBMBAA - Houston Chapter
