My Brother's Keeper since 2014 - Mayor Celebrates!

Mayor Turner celebrated MBK Houston’s Next Chapter and Successes HOUSTON - Today Mayor Sylvester Turner celebrated My Brother’s Keeper Houston’s (MBKH) accomplishments over the past eight years during his tenure and introduced its new Director, Chazz Bailey, who shared his vision for the future. MBKH, a Houston Health Department initiative focusing on boys and young men of color, leverages the expertise of educational institutions, nonprofits and other partners to combine strategies and programs to increase opportunities and close disparity gaps that exist in disadvantaged communities. “It's not about activities but it is about transforming lives for the better,” Turner said. “We have a lot of growing left to do. It is about reaching men, women, and meeting these young boys and young girls where they are and let them know their lives can be different.” Mayor Sylvester Turner and My Brother's Keeper Houston Project Director Chazz Bailey at the MBKH Next Chapter event Since 2014, MBKH has been critical in raising young boys and men of color out of poverty in some of Houston’s historically underserved communities. The initiative has led the charge in advocating for change in the Harris County District Attorney's Office, funded a mentoring program and collaborated with partners for a collective impact. Bailey shared his vision for the future of the initiative and highlighted MBKH’s Six Milestones that help guide the path to adulthood for its members, which have been key to its impact on Houston’s youth. “We will make our vision of providing access to opportunities, support, hope and lasting positive change for young men of color a reality,” Bailey said. “MBK Houston looks forward to the future, as we begin a new chapter.” The Six Milestones are: Getting a Healthy Start and Entering School Ready to Learn Reading at Grade Level by Third Grade Graduating from High School Ready for College and Career Completing Postsecondary Education or Training Successfully Entering the Workforce Keeping Kids on Track and Giving Them Second Chances My Brother's Keeper Houston Project Director Chazz Bailey, Mayor Sylvester Turner, Houston Health Department Chief of Staff, Judy Harris and Houston Health Department Director Stephen Williams attend My Brother's Keeper Houston's Next Chapter event. Some of MKBH’s partner programs include the Houston Youth Workforce Council, MBK Wrap Network, MBK ReDirect Diversion Program and the MBK TeamUp for Houston’s Youth. “The Houston Health Department is proud to serve as the backbone for this great initiative and lead the charge in mapping a successful path for young men of color,” said Stephen L. Williams, director, Houston Health Department. Turner ended the afternoon with a commitment to MBKH and Houston’s youth. “This is the relaunch, and the mayor is all in,” he said. “Over the next three months this program will receive the mayor’s intensive intervention.” Media Contacts: Porfirio Villarreal Office: 832-393-5041 Mobile: 713-826-5695 Porfirio.Villarreal@houstontx.gov Tucker Wilson Office: 832-393-5045 Mobile: 346-802-7508 Tucker.Wilson@houstontx.gov Fabian Gutierrez Office: 832-393-4860 Mobile: 346-831-9253 fabian.gutierrez@houstontx.gov Pascale Mondesir Office: 832-393-5069 Mobile: 832-840-5435 pascale.mondesir@houstontx.gov Website Twitter Facebook Copyright © 2020 City of Houston, All rights reserved. Covid Vaccines for Uninsured - Media Release Houston Health Dept

City of Houston Houston Health Department Media Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Date: 10/11/2023 View this email in your browser Houston Health Department now offering updated COVID-19 shots to uninsured, underinsured children and adults HOUSTON - The Houston Health Department is now offering free updated 2023-24 COVID-19 vaccines to adults and children lacking health insurance or enrolled in health plans that don’t cover all vaccination costs. The department’s four health centers and weekly mobile vaccination clinics across Houston are providing the updated Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech shots. “Getting an updated vaccine is the best way people can ensure they develop defenses against the COVID-19 virus,” said Dr. David Persse, chief medical officer for the City of Houston. “It’s best to secure protection offered by a COVID-19 shot before our area begins grappling with the spike in cases in November or the peak in December as we’ve experienced during the pandemic these last few years.” It is recommended that everyone 6 months and older receive an updated vaccine by the end of October to reduce their risk of developing severe illness, hospitalization, long COVID and death. The updated vaccines target the XBB lineage of the Omicron variant and are better able to fight currently circulating variants. Disease monitoring by the health department indicates that nearly 5,000 people in Houston have died due to complications from COVID-19 infection since the start of the pandemic. The federal government in previous years provided free COVID-19 vaccines for everyone, but distribution changed in September when the shots moved to the commercial market. The vaccines are still free for most people through their private health insurance, Medicare and Medicaid plans. People with insurance may need to use an approved, in-network pharmacy or healthcare facility. The department offers the updated shots to uninsured and underinsured adults through the Bridge Access program, launched by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) two months ago to provide free COVID-19 vaccines through December of 2024. It offers the shots to children who are either uninsured, underinsured, enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP or eligible for the Vaccines For Children program. Department health centers and their locations are: La Nueva Casa De Amigos Health Center, 1809 N. Main Street, Northside Health Center, 8504 Schuller Road, Sharpstown Health Services, 6201 Bonhomme Road, and Sunnyside Health Center, 4410 Reed Road. People can get the updated COVID-19 vaccine at least 2 months after their last COVID-19 shot. They also need to wait three months after having a COVID-19 infection before getting the updated shot. Uninsured and underinsured adults can also opt to get a free COVID-19 vaccine at retail pharmacies participating in Bridge Access program including, CVS, Walgreens and the smaller and independent pharmacies participating under the eTrueNorth umbrella. For more information, people can call the department’s call center at 832-393-4220 or visit HoustonHealth.org. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - HAVE YOU HAD YOUR MAMMOGRAM?

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month National Breast Cancer Awareness Month started in October 1985. The American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries initiated the movement with the help of former First Lady Betty Ford, who had survived breast cancer a decade earlier. Ford was diagnosed and had a mastectomy soon after her husband, Gerald Ford, became president in 1974. Her case brought more attention to breast cancer. Breast Cancer Awareness Month was intended to educate women about early detection — promoting mammograms as the primary tool — and taking charge of their breast health. The campaign’s primary color wasn't always pink. Awareness ribbons and their designated colors to show each cause's support have long been part of the global culture. In 1991 Charlotte Haley of Simi Valley, California, began hand-making peach-colored breast cancer awareness ribbons in her dining room. She distributed them at supermarkets asking people to wear them as a call to action. In 1992 Alexandra Penney, editor in chief of the Self magazine, came up with the idea of using pink ribbons as part of the magazine’s second annual Breast Cancer Awareness issue with the slogan: "Wear this ribbon & make a difference." The visibility and awareness Self magazine brought is celebrated globally to this day, while Haley is still remembered as the creator of the first peach breast cancer ribbon. "Cancer wherever it strikes the body, also strikes the spirit, and the best doctors in the world cannot cure the spirit. Only love and understanding can accomplish this important role." -Betty Ford Walking the talk with breast cancer Walking the talk with breast cancer Uncertainty never stopped her.
