City of Houston Mayor's Office Media Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Date: 12/19/2022 View this email in your browser Citywide Search For Houston's Next Poet Laureate Set To Take Place In Program's 10th Year HOUSTON - Mayor Sylvester Turner, the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs (MOCA), and the Houston Public Library (HPL), are pleased to announce the search for the City of Houston’s next poet laureate. In its 10th year, the Poet Laureate program has seen five poet laureates selected by the Mayor of Houston. The program celebrates Houston’s rich culture and diversity through the work of a Houston poet who serves as the City’s ambassador for the literary arts. During a two-year appointment, the poet laureate makes several guest appearances at special events and also completes a Community Outreach project. The poet laureate will receive an honorarium of $20,000 through the City Initiative Grant Program of the City of Houston and serve from April 2023 through April 2025. The role of the Houston poet laureate is to stimulate poetic impulse, foster appreciation of poetry in all its forms, and serve Houston residents and visitors with expressions of culture through words. “For the past decade, our poet laureates have reached into the hearts of our residents to find the soul of Houston and to be inspired by them,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “We are looking for the next poet laureate who will continue on the work of those before them and bring the position of the Houston poet laureate to new heights.” Current Houston Poet Laureate Emanuelee "Outspoken" Bean Each Poet Laureate for the City creates a signature Community Outreach project. The current Poet Laureate, Emanuelee “Outspoken” Bean, is recording Space City Mixtape – a mixture of spoken word narratives of Houston residents set to music by Russell Gus slated for release February 2023. Leslie Contreras Schwartz, Houston’s 2019-2021, Poet Laureate, created Bayou City Broadsides, artistic displays of lines from poems of everyday Houstonians. Houston's 2017-2019 Poet Laureate Deborah “D.E.E.P.” Mouton created Emerge, 11 community performance poetry videos highlighting various Houston neighborhoods. Houston’s 2015-2017 Poet Laureate Dr. Robin Davidson published an anthology of Houston residents’ favorite poetry, and Gwen Zepeda, Houston’s 2013-2015 Poet Laureate, created the Houston Poet Laureate’s social media platforms. The Houston Poet Laureate Selection Committee, a diverse group of poets, scholars, literary experts, and community representatives, will assist in the selection process. Eligible applications will be reviewed by a panel of poets, scholars, and literary experts that is diverse in age, ethnicity, and experience. Non-voting members include Victor Ancheta of MOCA and Justin Bogert of HPL. Exciting! Mayor Turner Announces North Houston Hwy Project

City of Houston Mayor's Office Media Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Date: 12/19/2022 View this email in your browser City of Houston, Harris County And TxDOT Announce New Memorandum of Understanding For The North Houston Highway Improvement Project HOUSTON - (Updated to include pictures) Mayor Sylvester Turner today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) regarding the North Houston Highway Improvement Project (NHHIP). Harris County leaders, including Commissioner Rodney Ellis, Commissioner Adrian Garcia and County Attorney Christian Menefee were also present at Monday’s news conference to announce the Harris County MOU and offer support in advancing TxDOT's North Houston Highway Improvement Project (NHHIP). The city’s MOU will focus on six key areas: - Housing and Community Cohesion - Drainage and Flood Mitigation - Reducing the NHHIP Footprint During Detailed Design - Transit and MaX Lanes - Connectivity - And Park Space and Urban Design See signed MOU. The NHHIP is designed from IH 45 North Corridor from Beltway 8 North to and around Downtown Houston. It will provide connectivity for residents and businesses within and beyond the State of Texas. “The path forward begins anew today. As I’ve said before, the NHHIP done the right way can be a transformational and generation-level project, enhancing connectivity, increasing mobility, and significantly lowering flood and existing parks and greenspace impacts,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “Today’s MOU represents the commitment, ongoing collaboration and communication between county, city and state governments to meet the needs of residents and businesses within the region. It also provides resources for Houstonians to stay in their neighborhoods, as our people, our residents, are the heart of our city.” TxDOT will engage the public throughout the period of construction to ensure communities are informed about developments, congestion, transportation issues and other related matters. The public will also be able to submit comments to TxDOT throughout the life of the project. “Both the Memorandum of Understanding executed with Mayor Turner, and the agreed upon terms and conditions agreed to with Harris County, which will warrant their dismissal of the lawsuit against the project, represent how staying focused on common ground and the benefits to the region in key areas of interest have provided an outcome that will enhance the I-45 NHHIP project as we move forward,” Texas Transportation Commissioner Laura Ryan said. “The City of Houston has spoken as a voice for our residents, and I will continue to support the project as long as my goals of resilience, multimodal transportation and equity are met,” Mayor Turner says. “Coming together under this MOU provides a path forward that will benefit us all.” Mayor Sylvester Turner with City of Houston, Texas Department of Transportation and Harris County leaders Contact: Mary Benton Director of Communications Office: 832.393.0830 Mobile: 713.208.6229 Mary.Benton@houstontx.gov Deidrea George Press Secretary Office: 832.393.0800 Mobile: 832.763.6972 deidrea.george@houstontx.gov

Dinner to Home: Mayor Sylvester Turner Announces New Program to Help Individuals Experiencing Homelessness

HOUSTON - During his annual State of the City address Wednesday afternoon, Mayor Sylvester Turner announced a new program to aid efforts to house individuals experiencing homelessness on Houston’s streets. The city is partnering with Bread of Life to launch – Dinner to Home – a food program designed to help individuals experiencing homelessness embark on the path to being housed. The pilot program will offer dinner service at a safe, clean, and appropriate location. Moreover, the program is designed to attract individuals who may not normally engage with the homeless housing system by providing food that people want to eat in a respectful, dignified atmosphere with tables, chairs, trash receptacles, restrooms, and cover (during inclement weather). Above all, an array of services, including housing assessments, will be reoccurring. “Food alone does not solve homelessness. However, when used with services and housing, food can be an important tool to help train professionals forge vital relationships needed to navigate vulnerable Houstonians into housing with wrap-around services,” said Mayor Turner. “Houston is on the right path, but we must all do more. The Dinner to Home program pairs perfectly with all the comprehensive, holistic initiatives the city is currently working on to help our brothers and sister experiencing homelessness, including the largest homeless housing initiative in our city’s history, the opening of the first Housing Navigation Center in the entire state, and endeavors with the private sector to secure more supportive housing units.” The program will provide dinner four nights a week, for three months, with an option to extend for up to 10 months. The program will be operated and managed by Bread of Life, a local not-for-profit with a track record of successfully working with vulnerable Houstonians. “Preventing an increase in street homelessness is tough, and reducing homelessness is even harder. However, Houston is showing the world that collaboration, housing resources, and the right tools can be done! The Dinner to Housing program will supplement and boost the extraordinary work outreach teams are already doing to reach out to, connect, and house Houstonians experiencing homelessness,” said Pastor Rudy Rasmus, founder of Bread of Life. Over the past two years, Houston’s regional, collaborative homeless housing program housed a record 10,900 individuals experiencing homelessness, leading to a 19% reduction in homelessness during the pandemic, including a nearly 10% reduction in street homelessness. In just the past two months alone, delegations of elected officials and leaders from Los Angles, Denver, Spokane, Tacoma, Albuquerque, and Delaware visited Houston to learn how the city, county, private sector, and agencies of The Way Home continue to work together on long-term solutions to reduce homelessness holistically. Full Ride Scholarship program - thanks efamily member Sam Denard for sharing!

Hello, Thank you for sharing information about our full ride scholarship program for Black STEM students last year. We’re still making dreams come true and could use your help again. You already know about the struggle our Black students face pursuing STEM professions. We established the Wade Scholars Program (WSP) to ease some of that burden and are proud to say that we have awarded full scholarships to 17 rising STEM stars. Our full scholarships for master’s-level coursework (3.3 semesters or 5 quarters) covers: tuition, fees, housing, food, instructional supplies, other academic expenses, and a stipend. We seek to enable talented scholars to focus on the experience of their graduate studies without worrying about immediate costs or incurred debt. We’re looking for more students to help. Our goal is to award 10 scholarships for 2023 and I'm asking you to share this exciting news with your network. We're looking for the talented visionaries of today who will define the scientific breakthroughs of tomorrow. Students are invited to learn more and apply here. Requests to attend top universities outside of the USA will be treated on an individual basis. Please share this information with the community both online and off-line. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. Thank you in advance. Sincerely, Lorna Jones Wade Institute of Technology Wade Scholarship Program

NASA is HIRING BUDGET ANALYSTS -- Salary $94,373 - $141,434 per year Closes Oct. 17th at 11pm CST

The JSC Office of the Chief Financial Officer has two vacancy opportunities posted in USAJobs. One is a GS-9/11/12 Budget Analyst and the other is a GS-13 Budget Analyst. The vacancy announcements will close on Monday, October 17, 2022. These opportunities are open to the Public so please share with anyone that may be interested and eligible for these positions. Openings in Houston and New Mexico. https://www.usajobs.gov/job/682307900 GS-13 Salary $94,373 - $141,434 https://www.usajobs.gov/job/682305400 GS-9-11-12 Salary $54,727 - $118,946 per year Houston salaries - https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/salaries-wages/salary-tables/pdf/2022/HOU.pdf A simple google search on NASA JOBS Houston (and Indeed.Com sends job openings to me daily!) you will find a LOT of positions with our contractors as we return to the Moon and plan for Mars. NASA needs all kinds of backgrounds - things you wouldn't think of like seamstresses for the Astronaut suits (contractor) to public affairs and education as well as accountants, engineers, architects, etc. we have the same kinds of need for services to fix our roofs (we are like a college campus), adminstrative personnel, security guards, doctors, psychologists, and we hire contractors to do research as well even divers in our large pool where the astronauts train and pilots at Ellington Field. Its a good idea if you are a college student to look into our internship programs (one is a summer that is not tied to a job, but a great experience for your resume and sometimes these students do get the opportunity to do Pathways which does lead to a job but is more of a commitment - you work first fall or spring semester then 2 summers. You might have to delay graduation however I tell students if you don't have a job don't graduate (you won't be able to get internships which internships are most likely to get you a position quicker than months submitting resumes.. if you can prove yourself as an intern you are likely to get hired in any field. Only take jobs that relate to your field so you can build a story that shows demonstrated interest (you might have to take 2 jobs as some internships don't pay money (one that's not your area of interest) but for example volunteering in a research lab or hospital will give you experiences to talk about on your grad school application and at your interview much moreso that working at gamestop (of course management skills do transfer)! https://intern.nasa.gov/ and NASA is not the only federal agency State Dept, IRS, Housing, even FBI and CIA have internships! Any federal agency and there are a lot of them ALL OVER THE COUNTRY! USAJOBS.GOV is where ANYONE can go and look for ANY kind of job and get ALERTS daily on openings in your area or anywhere in the country. Promotions - the budget analyst jobs typically you may start at a lower salary BUT promotions to the GS-12 often happen every 12 months if you are performing well. Benefits are awesome including holidays, vacation time, sick leave, etc.! Telework is not 100% usually (although you can apply for federal jobs that are 100% telework) but some positions you go into the office 2 days every 2 weeks (usually about once a week). CONTRACTORS -- NASA Contractors have interns and job openings -below is a list of all NASA Johnson Space Center contractors (a google search you can find other NASA locations contractors) https://www.nasa.gov/centers/johnson/about/people/contractorlist.html If you live in a HUBZone mention it! Contractors are especially looking to fill positions from these areas! HUBZone (Historically Underutilized Business Zone) Program. The Historically Underutilized Business Zones (HUBZone) program helps small businesses in urban and rural communities gain preferential access to federal procurement opportunities. Plus there are commercial space vendors - like SpaceX, Axiom, etc. and they too need public affairs to engineers -- the gamout! Google it! UTMB Galveston has an Aerospace Medicine rotation for physicians. Plus there are space agencies in Europe, South America, Japan etc. ESA is the European Space Agency - they hire interpretors.. Space has a place for you!! #1 Tip for full time openings in USAJOBS CREATE your RESUME in USAJOBS - it may say you can just upload your resume BUT if you miss anything they are looking for (which the resume created in USAJOBS prompts you with questions) you won't qualify for an interview!! Create the resume before the jobs open - DO IT NOW! If you miss this budget job due to the timeline, we will have more openings in the future. Also Federal jobs are available to pick persons from those who certify for many months - so if you don't hear right away it does not mean you aren't still under consideration. You might get called for an interview months down the line. Federal jobs get hundreds and sometimes thousands of applicants so the windows close quickly for openings some are even 24 hours or the first 100 or first 500 to apply so they might close before the "closing deadline"! Speaking of early, NOTE its Midnight Eastern time and even after you upload your application, there are demographic or other additional questions which can take several minutes so I recommend you get your application in hours or even a day ahead to avoid technical glitches. And make sure you get a confirmation they received your application. ALSO they may ask for transcripts and other information on your previous jobs that might take some time - you can upload all this in advance of any job opening up! That way when the job opens you can apply quickly for interns, for some jobs you will still have a significant amount of questions etc. so plan time to get your application in! Do your RESUME now (using their system not the upload if you can)! #1 Tip for students (PARENTS please read and share with your high schooler so they are ready for college GPA demands for jobs later) -- Students keep a 3.0 or higher GPA to be eligible for internships!! If you are close don't graduate go (take a few classes and RAISE your GPA - close to a 3.5 take an extra class and get it! some opportunities are 3.5 or higher - balance your courseload, drop a class early if you can't see getting a B or better - C's and D's sometimes are unrecoverable - make a spreadsheet know what you have to do to get that 3.0) -- seriously look at opportunities and see how many are CLOSED if you don't have a 3.0 or higher and that is forever - unless you go to Grad school and get a 3.0+ and some grad schools ONLY admit those with a 3.0 or higher GPA as undergrads so you limit your choices if you don't do what you need to do and get a good GPA (tutors are online from around the world - got a B you can tutor for an A to get that GPA! also on campus often free tutors - google sample tests, quizlet, etc.) use Rate my Professor google search to see if the professor grades fairly and what you have to do to get a good grade (this site tells you if showing up in class matters or reading all the powerpoints gets you an A for your SPECIFIC teacher!). Sometimes it still matters years later.. as you will still have that GPA when you are 65 years old (yes it can still matter if you decide to teach at a college when you are older I heard from someone that they will ask for ALL the transcripts!) Make sure your Linkedin is up to date I have heard some openings employers go to LinkedIn to seek applicants. I know of folks especially students who got jobs via LinkedIn. (Don't have the GPA doesn't mean you don't try, its just in some cases you won't be eligible or as competitive but in other cases with some experience you may qualify - some jobs in the government don't have an education requirement). Another reason to volunteer to get that EXPERIENCE on your resume. Helping in a friend or relative's business (ask!) you can add to your resume! Community volunteering often leads to meeting people and can lead to jobs as well with people who have the same passions and interest as you do! Students don't go into it looking for that of course (self-serving can be smelled a mile away)! Do what you love! Getting a job in the space industry gets your foot in the door, and you will see some jobs especially some of the small businesses will indicate X years experience in the industry so you might look at what you can get and take it with so many opportunities to do so many cool things! I mentor a young lady who was a flight controller in Mission Control (now a manager), another young lady who plans the mission for our analogy missions (where folks are on earth but simulating space both at JSC, Antartica, Florida Keys etc. At our recent ceremony for length of service we had someone who had worked at NASA 60 years! Several 50 years! And you can google it - we are the "Best Place to Work" in government - an award we've held the past 10 years! Its family oriented and intellectual enviroment that we all love!

Do You Qualify for a Tax Credit ?

This program is available today through November 15, eligible GetCTC clients in the 50 states and D.C., will be able to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) using the tool. To claim the EITC, clients will have to provide W-2 paperwork, which they do not have to provide to only claim the Child Tax Credit or missing third stimulus payment. The tool’s income limits remain the same: clients must earn less than $12,550 single or $25,100 married, and have less than $400 in self-employment income. This urgent communication should be shared with chapter members, community organizations, and your social media platforms immediately. Let's reach as many community partners as possible and help spread the word before the 11/15/2022 deadline. This is an opportunity for low-wage/income families, offering resources to ease financial burdens and free high-speed internet under the 2021 Child Tax Credit. Each family will need to have filed their Federal income taxes before applying. In summary:
Kids 0-5 / $3,600 per child, $300 per month / kids 6 - 17/ $3000 per child, $250 per child. The Free high-speed internet has no data caps, no additional fees, and is offered by local providers. These programs will not impact the families enrolled in OTHER GOV PROGRAMS such as SNAP, WIC, TANF, SSI, and Medicaid. The child(ren) must be in the tax system and have an INTF Number. It is not too late to file federal taxes without penalty and the Government has made it easy by offering a simplified tax form requiring basic information. MUST FILE and ENROLL BY 11/15/2022 - the last day of the program. The tax form can be completed on a cell phone. The tax credit applications can be completed on a cell phone.
