Mayor Turner's support of Lina Hidalgo - Mental Health

City of Houston Mayor's Office Media Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Date: 09/14/2023 View this email in your browser Mayor Turner's Statement in Support of Judge Lina Hidalgo HOUSTON - Please attribute the following statement to Mayor Sylvester Turner. “Sometimes, the act of simply asking for help can be the hardest part along the road of healing. I applauded Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo when she spoke openly about her need for treatment for depression, and I look forward to welcoming her back in October when she returns to her duties. "Overwhelmingly, I’ve seen supportive statements for her announcement from across the political spectrum. Given the wide swath of Houston families who have dealt with health issues – including mine – having leaders be open and honest about health needs has been a great example. Asking for help isn’t a weakness, and it shows great strength and self-awareness. "Regrettably, some have chosen this medical issue as a reason to continue their political games. To those who have chosen that route and those who have chosen to publish and amplify that gamesmanship, you have shown us who you are. Mental health is a serious issue that demands your respect. I stand with Judge Hidalgo and hope those who have sought to gain from her illness reflect on what that says about them. "Leaders understand that public statements on issues echo widely in the public – especially in stigmatizing matters like getting access to mental health treatment. Listen to the sound of your own voice and decide if you are leading, on simply throwing stones.” Contact: Mary Benton Director of Communications Office: 832.393.0830 Mobile: 713.208.6229 Mary.Benton@houstontx.gov Deidrea George Press Secretary Office: 832.393.0800 Mobile: 832.763.6972 deidrea.george@houstontx.gov Javelle Johnson Deputy Press Secretary/ Public Information Officer Office: 832.393.0808 Mobile: 832.571.7091 Javelle.Johnson@houstontx.gov

Houston Fire Dept Upgrades in Equipment

Houston City Council Approves Funding for Houston Fire Department Resource Advancements HOUSTON- Today, Mayor Sylvester Turner and Houston City Council approved an upwards of $2 million dollar budget which will allow the Houston Fire Department (HFD) to acquire necessary station and fleet upgrades. In an effort to better serve the citizens of Houston, the HFD will receive 10 hybrid electric Ford F-150 pickup trucks. City Council approved the purchase of 52, hybrid electric Ford F-150 pickup trucks in the total amount of $2,158,182 for Department of Neighborhoods, Houston Police, Houston Fire and General Services departments. These vehicles will be used by the department's personnel to provide services to citizens throughout the City. The hybrid electric Ford F-150 pickup trucks will replace vehicles in the Arson and Professional Standards Office that have reached end of useful life and this procurement supports Mayor Sylvester Turner's Houston Climate Action Plan. The funding for these vehicles is included in the FY2024 Capital Improvement Plan. City Council also approved $215,356 to purchase modular building replacements for HFD Station 101. The modular building replacements for Station 101 will replace the existing modular building that is past its life expectancy, requiring frequent costly maintenance. The modular building serves as a dormitory for firefighters, containing bedrooms, restrooms, and showers. The HFD will also receive one GMC 2500HD truck through the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) purchasing cooperative in the total amount of $104,992.92. This vehicle will serve as a replacement for a currently outdated and aging vehicle. The new GMC truck will be used to sustain and enhance the teams’ capabilities to respond to local and/or regional emergencies. Over the last 6 years, Chief Peña and the administration have worked diligently in replacing aging vehicles, and addressing facility needs. These purchases will serve to sustain and enhance the department's capabilities to respond to local and regional emergencies. A special thanks to Mayor Sylvester Turner and Houston City Council for continuously supporting the needs and initiatives of the Houston Fire Department. Harris County Clerk Aiming for a Smooth Transition as Election Administrative Duties Return to Her Office

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 1, 2023 Contact: Rosio Torres-Segura Rosio.Torres-Segura@cco.hctx.net Versión en Español Harris County Clerk Aiming for a Smooth Transition as Election Administrative Duties Return to Her Office (HOUSTON, TX) – Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth deputized election clerks this morning as one of her first calls of action as the County’s Chief Election Official to ensure a smooth transition and avoid any disruptions or delays in the ongoing work related to the conduct of the November 7, 2023 election. Texas Senate Bill 1750 went into effect today, abolishing the Election Administrator’s Office and returning election management to the County Clerk and voter registration to the Tax Assessor-Collector. “Our office has entered a new, but familiar era, as we welcome the Elections Department back to the Harris County Clerk’s Office,” said Clerk Hudspeth. “Rest assured that while a change in leadership has occurred, the mission remains the same.” Clerk Hudspeth’s objective is to conduct elections with a non-partisan spirit, provide all voters with the information, materials, and assistance needed to vote, and work to strengthen voters’ confidence in the election process in accordance with state and federal election guidelines. “Many things have changed since election management duties were removed from the County Clerk’s Office three years ago. The voting equipment and the environment in which elections are conducted have changed,” added Clerk Hudspeth. “Together, we will build on any progress made and continue to address the challenges that remain to ensure the conduct of well-organized, transparent, and fair elections.” Election information can be found at www.harrisvotes.com, for news and updates follow us on social media at @HarrisCoTxClerk and @HarrisVotes. ### Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth deputizes more than 100 election staff members at NRG Arena where Central Count for the November 7 Election is located. 8/30/2023: Virginia Department of Health: Announces Statewide Outbreak of Meningococcal Disease; Most patients are Black; 5 patients have died; Risk to Virginia’s population is still considered low. https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/blog/2023/08/30/virginia-department-of-health-announces-statewide-outbreak-of-meningococcal-disease/ Make sure you kids get the right vaccines (see link) at an early age: CNN now reports that most case-patients are Black or African American adults between 30 to 60 years of age, according to the Virginia Health Department. Only one person was vaccinated for Neisseria meningitidis type Y out of the 27 reported cases. The bacteria spread from person to person through the exchange of respiratory and throat secretions (e.g., kissing, coughing or sneezing directly into the face of others, or sharing cups, water bottles, eating utensils, and cigarettes). Keep washing those hands for 20 or more seconds. Symptoms can first appear flu-like and may quickly become more severe. Meningococcal disease can be treated with antibiotics, but quick medical attention is extremely important. You should not delay seeking care if you or a loved one experience the following symptoms: fever, chills, headache, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to bright light, and possibly a rash. https://www.cnn.com/2023/09/02/health/virginia-deaths-meningococcal-disease-outbreak/index.html?utm_term=link&utm_content=2023-09-03T01%3A30%3A10&utm_source=twCNN&utm_medium=social
