Mayor Turner Initiative: Job Training, Resume Writing, Tattoo Removal, Social Service Agencies

Turnaround Houston Resource Fair www.turnaroundhouston.org.

NOVEMBER 5, 2016
Date:  Saturday, November 5, 2016 from 9 AM to 1 PM
Location: Acres Homes Multi-Service Center
Address: 6719 W. Montgomery Road, Houston, TX 77091
Council District: B

Turnaround Houston will offer access to job training, resume writing, tattoo removal, social service agencies, educational institutions, counseling and intervention to help hard to employ Houstonians turn their lives around.

“There are Houstonians who have difficulty securing employment due to a variety of reasons which may include a lack of education, prior criminal history, poverty, mental health issues and a lack of positive influences,” said Mayor Turner. “There is a part of our city that is in dire need of assistance and it’s our responsibility to ensure that they are plugged into vital resources and become a part of our city’s success. With the launch of Turnaround Houston, we want to eliminate the barriers to employment by offering a roadmap to a brighter future.”

As a part of this initiative, Houstonians who are hard to employ should also know that if they connect with the resources that are available, they can turn their lives around. There are thousands of success stories in the city, one such example is Angel Ponce who works in the Mayor's Office of People with Disabilities. Ponce was previously involved with a gang and suffered a life altering accident which finally pushed him on the right track.

“I used to have tattoos on my face, I didn't care what I looked like and I didn't have a future. I had known about the services available to me at the City of Houston through the Mayor’s Anti-Gang Office, but I didn’t take advantage of them until I suffered a spinal injury which caused me to re-assess my life. I am now a productive part of society helping former gang members and those with disabilities such as my own. This wouldn’t have been possible without the City’s resources,” said Ponce.

Each Turnaround Houston resource fair will include workshops on resume creation and interview tips. Participants can also learn how to start their own businesses and hear the success stories of Houstonians who have received a second chance.

Mayor Sylvester Turner Asking for your Vote to Defeat HISD Prop 1

Info from a recent mailer I received...sharing our Mayor's words..I am not well versed on this issue but what got me, is what is in RED:

I am writing to ask for support defeating HISD Proposition 1 on the November 8 ballot.
Time is short – seniors are voting now by mail and early voting begins in less than two weeks. Our need is great. Our task is to raise $1 million in the next two weeks to fund our television buy.
Prop. 1 will force HISD to send $162 million of our local tax dollars to the state in February, in theory to be redistributed to other school districts. And that’s not the worst of it. There is no guarantee that any of the funds will be used for education.
It’s called “recapture” or sometimes, “Robin Hood,” and it will bankrupt our schools. The amount of tax dollars taken for redistribution goes up every year – and will exceed $1 billion in four years.
The impacts on our public education system will be devastating, including shutting down neighborhood schools, laying off teachers, cutting or eliminating mentoring, tutoring and college preparation programs and more.
Recapture is the legacy of a “temporary” fix to Texas’ school finance system that has not been replaced in more than 20 years. And, once HISD is in the recapture system, it is in it forever. There is no turning back.
To be clear, voting against HISD Prop. 1 won’t fix the entire problem; but it will force the legislature to act. And education professionals, our current and former mayors and many others are certain that HISD will get a better deal in the legislature than going bankrupt under recapture. Please make a generous donation today. Corporate contributions are permitted and there are no limits. If you have any questions about making a contribution, contact Pat Strong at Pat@StrongStrategies.com or (713) 942-5803.
Thank you for helping me protect Houston’s schools.
Mayor Sylvester Turner

P.S. We can definitely defeat this measure, but as you can see the issue is complex and we need the resources to explain to voters what’s at stake.

Participate in the Plan Houston Survey!

Community Leader,

The wait is over...the Plan Houston resident survey is now available! By participating in this short 2 minute survey (www.planhouston.org), you can make your voice heard and actually influence what is funded in our next City budget!

As Vice Chair of the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Committee, I have been working closely with the Mayor's office and Planning Department on the implementation of Plan Houston. Plan Houston is the City's first general plan that encompasses a broad vision for Houston outlined in 12 core strategies. The City has developed an enhanced budgeting process in which resident input will be obtained regarding issues that are most important to them via an online Plan Houston survey.  This resident input will be incorporated into initiatives to be included in the FY2018 budget.

The public input period will continue through November 25th, and we need your help! We are enlisting the help of community leaders to help spread the word and encourage resident participation in the Plan Houston survey (www.planhouston.org).  Please share this information with your civic club and organization members, neighbors, families, and friends by including it in your newsletters, social media, email blasts, word of mouth or by sharing promotional materials and paper copies of the survey.  We need your help to truly obtain resident input on a broad scale. Let us know what is important to you!

If you have any questions or if you need paper copies of the survey, you may reach out to the Planning Department at 832-393-6600, or you may contact our office by emailing atlarge4@houstontx.gov, or dialing 832-393-3012.

Sincerely,

The haunting beauty of Henry O. Tanner's work, Disciples Healing the Sick ( c. 1930) can now be experienced by the throngs pouring into the newly opened National Museum of African-American History and Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington, D.C.  The painting, part of CAU Museum's permanent collection, is now on loan to NMAAHC for a period of five years.  It not only speaks to the caliber of the University's art holdings, but also connects Tanner, one of America's most significant painters, to one of CAU's parent institutions, Clark College, where he once served as a member of the art faculty.

Mayor Turner "Getting it Done" Be Proud!

Dear Donna,
I am proud to report to you that our City Council voted nearly unanimously (16 votes to 1) to endorse our historic package of pension reforms.
The vote clears the way for the City to move forward in partnership with all three pension systems – representing our police officers, our municipal employees and our firefighters – to seek legislative approval of the reforms.
This plan is transformative and budget neutral. We are solving our pension problem permanently and we are doing it without needing a tax rate increase.
I am thankful to everyone who has helped get us to this point. That includes City Council, the pension systems, our city employees and many others.
It is a big deal that employees have agreed to these benefit changes. I know this has not been easy, and I thank each of them for their patience, understanding and service. This plan will provide stable and sustainable retirements at an affordable cost to the taxpayers who foot the bill. Retirees won’t have to worry if the check will be there.
You can be sure that there are those out there who will continue to say it can’t be done. Some are fighting to stay relevant; some just need more information; and some want a different balance between the goals of providing secure retirements for our public employees and protecting taxpayers.
To all, I say, join us. We are moving our city forward after more than 15 years of gridlock. Let’s do it together.
Warm regards,
Mayor Sylvester Turner

Excerpt from NY Times Review
As those who saw her Tony-winning show, “Bridge & Tunnel,” will recall, Ms. Jones seems to slip into the soul of another person with the casual ease that most of us use to slide into a pair of flip-flops. Although this remarkable actor uses minimal props and no costume changes in “Sell/Buy/Date,” she nevertheless brings to life more than a dozen characters with such distinctness that each seems to take over her voice, her mind, her very presence.

Making of Hamilton on PBS Oct 21

TUNE IN OR STREAM

Friday, October 21 at 9/8c on PBS
A behind-the-scenes documentary look at Lin-Manuel Miranda's Broadway musical Hamilton coming to PBS Great Performances as part of the 2016 PBS Arts Fall Festival.

From New York Times:
The story of one of the most acclaimed musicals in Broadway history and the story of the man the show is about are deftly intertwined in “Hamilton’s America,” a “Great Performances” documentary being broadcast on Friday, Oct. 21, on PBS. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the book, music and lyrics for the musical “Hamilton,” is a genial guide to both tales.

He recalls how the idea for the stage show came to him while he was taking a breather after mounting his earlier hit, “In the Heights,” and started reading Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton. No one was more surprised that such a book could become the toughest ticket on Broadway than Mr. Chernow. “Lin invited me to ‘In the Heights,’” he recalls, “and I went backstage, and he said, ‘Ron, I was reading the book, and hip-hop songs started rising off the page.’ And I said to him, ‘Really?’”
Haven’t seen the show? Musical excerpts are served up as Mr. Miranda and others relate how it took shape while also detailing Hamilton’s considerable role in American history.

TUNE IN OR STREAM
Friday, October 21 at 9/8c on PBS
A behind-the-scenes look at Lin-Manuel Miranda's Broadway musical Hamilton coming to Great Performances as part of the 2016 PBS Arts Fall Festival.

Hamilton, Broadway's rap hip-hop-infused smash about Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, orphan, immigrant, first U.S. Treasury Secretary, has won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Looks like Alexander Hamilton (January 11, 1755 or 1757 – July 12, 1804) will keep his place on the $10 bill !

Miranda said that he came across Ron Chernow's 2004 biography of the first Treasury Secretary haphazardly in 2008. Miranda instantly connected Hamilton's unorthodox immigrant upbringing with those of his rap heroes like Notorious B.I.G. and Jay Z. The musical based on Hamilton's life has been hailed by politicians of both political parties from President Obama to Dick Cheney. Notably, the cast is nearly all African-American and Hispanic (their casting call for non-white actors caught some heat). Aaron Burr, for example, is portrayed by a Black actor. Black actors also play the roles of Lafayette, Jefferson, George Washington, James Madison, etc. Lin-Manuel Miranda (born January 16, 1980), Hamilton creator/star as Hamilton/rapper/actor, was born in Manhattan to Puerto Rican parents. And, we spoke to some of the front office staff at the stage door before the show and they too were Hispanic/Black/Latino millennials...  Lots of high school kids are learning about Hamilton now, were in attendance and had memorized the lyrics on the 2-disc Hamilton cast recording.

Hamilton is practically why we have money: As the nation’s first Treasury secretary, he designed the US financial system.
And that was after he wrote most of “The Federalist Papers” — essays that played a key role in getting the Constitution adopted.
And after he helped win the Revolution as Gen. George Washington’s right-hand man as chief staff aide.

Born out of wedlock, raised in the West Indies, and orphaned as a child, Hamilton pursued a college education through the help of local wealthy men.

When Vice President Aaron Burr ran for governor of New York state in 1804, Hamilton crusaded against him as unworthy. Taking offense at some of Hamilton's comments, Burr challenged him to a duel in 1804 and mortally wounded Hamilton, who died the next day.
