Houston COVID-19 Registry

CitizensNet: HEALTH | 04-28-2020 COVID-19 Registry: Help us understand the impacts of COVID-19
As COVID-19 continues to affect our communities, it is important to understand the impacts of this outbreak. Rice University and local health departments, including Houston Health Department and Harris County Public Health, developed the COVID-19 Registry to identify who was (and continues to be) impacted, and understand how COVID-19 affects the health and well-being of our communities.
Measuring who is being impacted and in what ways will help to:
Track virus spread over time and across geography
Measure economic and health impacts
Anticipate healthcare needs as the pandemic unfolds
Understand behavior in response to policy changes
Identify popular and effective sources of information
The COVID-19 survey is open to any individual 18 years or older. The survey is voluntary and takes 10 minutes to complete. Please visit registry.rice.edu/covid19 to learn more!

Affordable Counseling Resources-Open Path Collective.com

On today's Cornell Panel Discussion, the mental health speaker suggested this site to find Therapists for $30-$60 intended for those without health care. OpenPathCollective.com Also it was mentioned Psychology Today also has resources for sliding scale therapists. I did check the reviews for Open Path and they had pretty good reviews.

During the panel discussion there was a discussion that right now we are experiencing collective trauma - as in 911 or a school shooting.. folks are dealing with anxiety, separation from friends and family, loss of jobs, self-medication (alcohol, smoking, drugs) - If you are having symptoms such as headaches, GI issues, (I think she said "fast") breathing, feeling the need to control everything around you, feeling stressed need to talk to someone that does not know you to talk it out - you may want to consider reaching out for counseling. Everyone feels some anxiety some time.. and counseling can help!

https://webuyblack.com/ & more New Way to Support Black Business-Important During This Time

On a recent Zoom call of Cornell Alumni we discussed how African American businesses and the arts were getting hit hard during the shutdown. Finding ways to support these businesses is important to our community. One of the ways discussed was this website, similar to Amazon that sells toothbrushes, cleaners, clothes, jewelry, etc. The speaker spoke of using this site to purchase supplies for his wife's dental office as well as purchasing watches for himself. I haven't tried it yet, but if you have, let me know at donna.blackshear.reynolds@gmail.com -- and let me know if you'd be ok to add your comment to the blog! I was so excited about this idea had to share!

This site https://webuyblack.com/ also has a blog that I found very interesting and they offer opportunities to add your store to the site. https://webuyblack.com/

Also there is a movement to purchase from black owned restaurants during this time as well. As well make donations to arts organizations - dance companies, theater, etc.

Fun Idea ZOOM Scavenger Hunt How-To - Family and Friends

I heard about this from an efamily member... thought I'd share the 2 emails that got this going for her boys and they had a great time! could be boys or girls kids or adults social distancing fun!

SAMPLE EMAIL
Hello friends,

Calling all scavenger hunters! YOUR NAME HERE we are hoping your son might want to join in on a virtual scavenger hunt tomorrow (Saturday YOUR DATE HERE) afternoon from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

Here is the deal:

At 1:00 p.m. Saturday I will email or text the list to your son.
He will have two hours to take pictures of as many things on the list as possible. Nothing on the list will require you to leave your house/street, do anything embarrassing, or post any pictures anywhere. You may not have the item at your house, but that’s okay. I’m guessing everyone will have things they don’t have.
He or a family member will have to be in each picture so that I know it’s not an image they just found on the internet. For example, if the item is a dog, it has to be a real live dog. Not a picture of a dog or a book about a dog, and he has to be at least partially in the picture.
He will either email or text the pictures to me by 3:00 p.m. He can do it as he goes, or all at once at the end.
At 4:00 we will have a zoom call to announce the winner and share a few of the pictures. The winner will get a $25 Amazon gift card. If there is a tie, we will have a drawing for the winner out of the group of tied people

Saturday Scavenger Hunt

I will send you the Scavenger Hunt list at 2pm on Saturday. When you find each item on the list, take a photo of the item. You or a family member should be in the picture. No pictures without yourself in it and no pictures from the internet. You can text or email the photos to me. The deadline is 3:00 p.m. today. Have fun and let me know if you have any questions! The link for the Zoom call at 4:00 p.m. today is at the bottom.

One World IdeasxAction Ta-Nehisi Coates and Heather McGhee

Hello - Over 500 people were on this zoom call, so when I tried to get in I couldn't - I asked for the youtube and here it is!!

Thank you all for registering for One World Ideas x Action with Ta-Nehisi Coates and Heather McGhee in conversation with One World Editor-in-Chief, Chris Jackson. We loved the chance to partner with our friends from the Apollo Theater and gather in (virtual) community to share ideas and important questions at such a challenging moment. It was a powerful conversation that touched on structural inequalities, the confederate flag, and the power of comic books in times of crisis.

If you were unable to join us live for the event, we would love to direct you to the evening's program now up on YouTube: https://youtu.be/vc1tqXzJ_YM

If you are interested in purchasing any of the books from last night’s conversation, links are below:

· THE WATER DANCER by Ta-Nehisi Coates

· Pre-order THE SUM OF US by Heather McGhee

· BETWEEN THE WORLD AND ME by Ta-Nehisi Coates

· WE WERE EIGHT YEARS IN POWER by Ta-Nehisi Coates

· THE BEAUTIFUL STRUGGLE by Ta-Nehisi Coates

Listen to Heather McGhee’s Ted Talk about inequality and its effects – it’s brilliant and summarizes the research and reporting she explores at greater depth in her forthcoming book.

At a recent event with One World authors Mira Jacob, Kevin Nguyen and Cathy Park Hong, an attendee named Kimberly started a google document to capture all of the book suggestions that were coming up in the chat. With a hat tip to her, we've made one for this conversation and would love for you to share favorite reads and organizations that are doing essential work in this time. Click here for the Google doc.

“We’ve entered a bold new era of space exploration with the Artemis program, and we are thrilled to see so many incredible Americans apply to join us,” said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. “The next class of Artemis Generation astronauts will help us explore more of the Moon than ever before and lead us to the Red Planet.”
The application for the newest class of astronauts opened March 2 and closed March 31. The number of people who applied to be an astronaut represents the second-highest number of applications NASA has ever received, surpassed only by the record of 18,300 set by the most recent class of astronauts who graduated in January.
For this round of applications, NASA increased the education requirement for applicants from a bachelor’s degree to a master’s degree in a science, technology, math, or engineering field. In addition, the application period was shortened from two months to one.
“We’re able to build such a strong astronaut corps at NASA because we have such a strong pool of applicants to choose from,” said Anne Roemer, manager of the Astronaut Selection Board and director of human resources at Johnson. “It’s always amazing to see the diversity of education, experience and skills that are represented in our applicants. We are excited to start reviewing astronaut applications to identify the next class of astronaut candidates.”
Since the 1960s, NASA has selected 350 people to train as astronaut candidates for its increasingly challenging missions to explore space. With 48 astronauts in the active astronaut corps, more will be needed to serve as crew aboard spacecraft bound for multiple destinations and propel exploration forward as part of Artemis missions and beyond.
Once selected, the astronaut candidates will go through approximately two years of initial skills training, such as spacewalking, robotics, and spacecraft systems, as well as expeditionary behavior skills, such as leadership, followership, and teamwork. After completing training, the new astronauts could launch on American rockets and spacecraft -- developed for NASA’s Commercial Crew Program -- to live and work aboard the International Space Station, 250 miles above Earth. There they will take part in experiments that benefit life at home and prepare us for the Moon and Mars.
This new class also may launch aboard NASA’s powerful new Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft for Artemis missions to the Moon. Beginning in 2024, NASA will send the first woman and next man to the lunar surface and will establish sustainable lunar exploration by 2028. Gaining insights from new experiences on and around the Moon will prepare NASA to send the first humans to Mars in the 2030s.
