Lunar Planetary Institute Summer Internship Program
Training Scientists Since 1977
The LPI Summer Intern Program in Planetary Science provides undergraduate students with an opportunity to perform cutting-edge, peer-reviewed research, learn from widely respected planetary scientists, and discover exciting careers in planetary science. During the 10-week internship, students have the opportunity to participate in enrichment activities, including NASA Johnson Space Center scientific visits, lectures, and career development workshops.
Many of today’s planetary science leaders got their start as LPI summer interns. Every career starts somewhere, and we encourage you to join us as you embark on your journey.
Program Overview
The Lunar and Planetary Institute invites undergraduates with at least 50 semester hours of credit to experience cutting-edge research in the lunar and planetary sciences. Students with majors in a physical or natural science, engineering, computer science, or mathematics have an advantage, but any eligible student may apply.
The 10-week program runs from June 1, 2020–August 7, 2020. As a summer intern, you will work one-on-one with a scientist at the LPI or at the NASA Johnson Space Center on a research project of current interest in lunar and planetary science. Interns are selected by the project advisors who look for academic excellence and scientific interest and backgrounds compatible with their specific project needs.
Benefits of an internship:

City of Houston FREE Financial Counseling to reduce personal debt and increase individual saving-Mayor's Complete Communities Program Initiative
Latest component of Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Complete Communities initiative unveiled
National program launching in Houston in the Acres Home and Magnolia Park neighborhood multi-service centers
Goals include reducing personal debt and increasing individual savings to help Houstonians have a more prosperous future
HOUSTON - Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and representatives of national nonprofit organization Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund and Regions Bank on Thursday announced the opening of two Financial Empowerment Centers (FECs) to provide one-to-one, professional financial counseling to Houstonians at no cost to residents.
The FEC locations are at the Acres Homes Multi Service Center, 6719 W. Montgomery Rd. 77091, in north Houston and the Magnolia Multi Service Center, 7037 Capitol St. 77011, in the City’s East End area.
A national program of the Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund, the two FECs are strategically located in two of the 10 areas Mayor Turner designated as Complete Communities – Acres Home and Magnolia Park-Manchester – to ensure equitable access throughout the City, especially for low- and moderate-income families.
“Houstonians in historically under-served neighborhoods want access to services like financial planning to prepare for purchasing a home, sending their children to college or saving for the future,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “That’s why I believe our partnership with Regions Bank and Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund is critically important. Complete Communities works to give quality services and amenities to residents through a cross-sector approach. By tapping the strengths of our community members, nonprofits, businesses and philanthropic partners, together, we can build a stronger and more resilient city.”
The FECs are staffed by professionally-trained financial counselors who will help individuals and families to better manage their finances, pay down debt, increase savings, establish and build credit, and access safe and affordable mainstream banking products. At the core of the FEC model is the integration of counseling into other social services, such as housing and foreclosure prevention, workforce development, prisoner reentry, benefits access, domestic violence services, and more.
The Alliance for Multicultural Community Services employs the financial counselors and manages the day-to-day operations of the program. The Alliance is a leading local nonprofit organization committed to providing financial and social services to Houston’s residents.
Regions Bank has pledged its funding support to the Financial Empowerment Centers program as part of the bank’s commitment to supporting financial wellness, one of Regions’ top community investment priorities. The bank also supports a similar Financial Empowerment Center initiative in Nashville, Tennessee.
“The health of our city begins with the financial health of the people who call it home,” said Mark Jacobs, Houston Market Executive for Regions. “By supporting Complete Communities –
and the Financial Empowerment Centers partnership specifically – we can provide valuable resources to empower thousands of families working to reduce debt and build savings for a brighter future.”
The Mayor’s Office of Complete Communities collaborated with the Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund (CFE Fund), a national nonprofit organization working with over 80 cities across the country, to train the Alliance staff in personalized, one-to-one financial coaching.
First piloted in New York City under Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg in 2008, FECs across the country have worked with over 99,000 clients, helping them reduce individual debt by over $137 million, and increasing their families’ savings by close to $19 million. A CFE Fund evaluation showed that this program works even for residents with very low incomes and other complex financial challenges. Houston is one of over two dozen local governments working to launch a local FEC initiative.
“Local leaders know first-hand the connection between family financial stability and community financial stability,” said Jonathan Mintz, President and CEO of the Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund. “Mayor Turner and the City of Houston are part of a growing national movement to bring free, high-quality financial counseling as a public service to their residents; we are proud to partner with Mayor Turner on this critical work.”
According to the FDIC, 310,340 people or 11.8% Houstonians do not have a checking or savings account. Of the 1.6 million households in Harris County, 28% are unable to cover their basic needs and 15% live at or below the Federal Poverty Level according to the United Way of Greater Houston report on Houston’s A.L.I.C.E. population – Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed residents. The United Way of Greater Houston also is a financial underwriter of the Houston FEC program.
“The Financial Empowerment Centers initiative is designed to assist all Houstonians to become financially healthy, but we are specifically targeting this effort to help heads of households who don’t earn enough to be able to afford the basic necessities of food, housing, transportation, child care and health care,” said Shannon Buggs, director of the Mayor’s Office of Complete Communities. “The FECs are here to help our low-income neighbors overcome financial struggles and achieve sustainable financial success.”
Financial counseling will be available for Acres Home residents immediately after the grand opening on January 9. The FEC program receives client referrals from community partners that include Lone Star College, the Fifth Ward Chamber of Commerce, Houston Housing Authority, The Health Department’s Community Re-entry Network Program, the Housing and Community Development Department, the Harris County Area Agency on Aging, the Mayor’s Anti-Gang Office, and the Mayor’s Office of Veterans’ Affairs.
People interested in connecting with a financial counselor may visit www.houstontx.gov/fec or call 713-776-4700 ext. 405 to reach the FEC in Magnolia Park or 832-393-1125 to reach the FEC in Acres Home.

Houston Health Dept Saves Citizens on Prescription Drugs
CitizensNet: Houston Health Department bringing prescription medication savings to Houston homes | 01-15-2020
HOUSTON - The Houston Health Department is marking the tenth year of its Coast2CoastRx prescription coupon card by bringing it to hundreds of thousands of Houston homes. The free card, which offers significant discounts on prescription medications, will arrive with city utility bills starting in mid-January.
Since its launch in October 2009, the Coast2CoastRx prescription coupon card has saved Houston-area residents more than $47 million in prescription medication costs. The free card does not require an application, registration or any personal information, and can be used at thousands of participating pharmacies. It is available for free to anyone, regardless of age, income, citizenship status or insurance coverage.
“Over the past decade, the Coast2CoastRx prescription coupon card has been a powerful tool for Houstonians to save significantly on prescription medication costs,” said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. “The City of Houston is pleased to continue its valuable partnership with Coast2CoastRx into the new decade.”
The Coast2CoastRx prescription coupon card is available for pickup at Houston Health Department multi-service centers, WIC clinics and health centers. The card is also available at coast2coastrx.com/houston-tx, where it can be texted, emailed or printed for immediate use. The website also offers a pricing tool that shows how much people will save by using the card. In 2019, the card program saved people nationally an average of 65% on the cost of generic and brand name prescriptions.
Savings for Houstonians through the Coast2CoastRx program comes at no cost to the City of Houston. In addition to the discounts on prescriptions, the card also provides discounts on dental and vision care, hearing aids, diabetic supplies, lab tests, pet prescriptions and veterinarian services.
“We find the Coast2CoastRx program to be especially beneficial in enhancing the lives of older adults through our Harris County Area Agency on Aging,” said Deborah Moore, assistant director for human services at the Houston Health Department. “The card is an important tool in helping older adults who may be living on a fixed income stretch their healthcare dollars.”
Since 2010, Coast2CoastRx has provided approximately $70,000 annually to the Houston Health Foundation to support vital public health programs such as See to Succeed, which has provided more than 65,000 pairs of corrective eyeglasses to school-aged children, Project Saving Smiles, which has served 50,000 second graders with dental screenings, sealants, and fluoride varnishes and the home-delivered meals program, which facilitates more than a million meals for senior citizens annually.
“The Coast2CoastRx program will continue to work to bring savings for Houstonians’ healthcare needs. As an organization we are dedicated to making the process of obtaining and utilizing free prescription discounts easy and accessible to all,” says Edward Rahn, President of Coast2CoastRx. “The Coast2CoastRx program is proud to provide Houstonians this valuable free service.”

Saving the Neighborhood from Emissions - Mayor's Statement
Mayor Turner calls company's decision to withdraw concrete batch plant application a victory for local residents
HOUSTON - Please attribute the statement below to Mayor Sylvester Turner.
"I am relieved to learn that Soto Ready Mix has withdrawn its application to build a concrete batch plant in Acres Home. This is a great victory for residents who did not want to live with unhealthy air emissions, specifically particulate matter, heavy trucks and noise in their neighborhood.
"During a news conference earlier this month, I, along with other elected officials, residents and community leaders urged the TCEQ to vote against issuing a standard permit for a concrete facility or for the company to withdraw its application for a new permit.
"The company chose to withdraw the application, but the action proves the TCEQ must have more tools to protect vulnerable neighborhoods and prevent companies from building concrete batch plants near homes and parks where our children play.
"Last legislative session, the city of Houston advocated for two reforms that would have been very helpful. I will direct my government relations team to continue working on protection for residents in communities without land use regulations.
"I thank the Houston Police Department, Houston Public Works, the Houston Health Department, Municipal Courts, along with Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, State Senator John Whitmire, State Rep. Jarvis Johnson and many others who helped to bring this situation to a desired outcome."
