HMAAC Announces Poet Laureate Emeritus Deborah Mouton Artist Residency at The Power Center
The Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC) is pleased to announce the May/June HMAAC artist residency of Deborah Mouton, the internationally known writer, educator, activist, performer, and the first Black Poet Laureate of Houston, Texas. The residency will take place at The Power Center in Houston, Texas and will involve engagement of students from The Imani School.
During her HMAAC residency Mouton will review and edit her renowned play The World’s Intermission, which premiered November 12, 2021 at Jones Hall for the Society for the Performing Arts. The play, A Deep Ink Production, focuses on the world’s two year pandemic, and how one family dealt with quarantine amidst fragile mental health conditions, rising racial tensions, and the coming Texas Spring, the perfect storm for imagining a new beginning.
According to Mouton, “I wrote the play to inspire and as events continue to unfold I wanted to revisit it. This residency allows me to do that, and I am delighted to have Imani School students involved in the project.”
Imani Principal Pat Williams sees the residency as supporting the school’s intentions; “At The Imani School we are intentionally igniting a fire within our children that breeds self-confidence, faith, and academic achievement, and this residency helps us do that.”
For HMAAC CEO John Guess, Jr. this residency is about exploring where we have been and our strengths as we move forward. “As we continue to adjust to our new pandemic normal,” he indicated, “this play reminds us of our resilience and the human gift of adaptability,“
HMAAC Board President Cindy Miles added, “We are so delighted to bring the talent of Deborah Mouton into a community of color, and we could not have a better partners in this endeavor than The Power Center and the Imani School and its Principal Pat Williams.”
The culmination of the residency will be performances of The World’s Intermission at The Power Center June 24 and 25.
Mouton’s residency is sponsored by the Houston Endowment, HEB, Craig McGowan and the Board of Directors of HMAAC.

The mission of HMAAC is to collect, conserve, explore, interpret, and exhibit the material and intellectual culture of Africans and African Americans in Houston, the state of Texas, the southwest and the African Diaspora for current and future generations. In fulfilling its mission, HMAAC seeks to invite and engage visitors of every race and background and to inspire children of all ages through discovery-driven learning. Wood Badge
Wood Badge is BSA’s “next level” training course that puts you in the position of your Scouts, working together as members of a Cub Scout Pack, Scouts BSA Troop, and Venturing Crew. You’ll experience activities the way your Scouts do – and in doing so, will gain a perspective you can’t get anywhere else. At the end of the two weekend course, you’re guaranteed to be ready to tackle any problem your Scouts throw your way. And, it might just be the most fun you’ll ever have as a Scouter.
What happens at Wood Badge?
At Wood Badge, participants join patrols of complete strangers, and everyone gets a turn as patrol leader. At first, the process feels forced: You will spend 24 hours a day with these people you just met, and you will like it. But by Day Three or Four, you realize the bonds formed with these Scouters won’t end when the course does.
The activities involved in Wood Badge aren’t a BSA creation. If your boss shipped you off to a team-development course in the past several decades, you’ve probably heard of them. In fact, you can find most of the leadership lessons taught at Wood Badge in the self-help section of your local bookstore. But those books lack the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law, and they don’t include Scouting-specific connections that convert abstract leadership lessons into something you can actually use. And unlike your office’s awkward team-building outings, everyone at Wood Badge actually wants to be there. One female Scout leader said, “I’ve worked with great groups and dysfunctional groups. I was never able to understand why some worked and some didn’t. Wood Badge really helps me connect the dots.” This is a course that you can use everywhere else in your life. It makes you a better leader and a better communicator. It’s something you can bring to your family and your workplace. It makes you think about the things you do, how you do them, and why.
Wood Badge takes place over a series of two weekends in the Spring or Fall or in a week during the Summer. These weekends include leadership classes, games, activities, and plenty of meaningful conversations. Participants then have 18 months to complete their Wood Badge ticket, a series of five projects that benefit a Scouter’s home unit and local community. These ticket items extend the reach of Wood Badge well beyond the five-day course.
Where can I take this training?
The course takes place at Lost Pines Scout Reservation, 785 FM 1441, Bastrop, TX 78602.
