Rev Bill Lawson Services

Reverend Bill Lawson’s body will lie in state from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2024. The Community Service of Celebration will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2024 and the Congregational Service of Celebration will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 24, 2024. Both services will be held at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, 3826 Wheeler Avenue, Houston, TX 77004. The Passing of Our Beloved Founding Pastor It is with both inexpressible sorrow and overwhelming gratitude that we announce the passing of our Founding Pastor, Reverend William A. Lawson on May 14, 2024. He has completed his time of service here on earth and is now enjoying eternal rest. In his nearly 96 years, Reverend Lawson has served as husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, as well as preacher, professor, and civil rights leader. But whatever title you may have used to describe him, it has been said many times that Reverend Bill Lawson was "Houston’s Pastor." Lawson was born on June 28, 1928 to William Lawson, Sr. and Clarisse Riggs. They divorced when Lawson was just a toddler and he was adopted by his mother’s second husband, Walter Cade. He also gained three siblings, Walter Cade, Jr., Catherine, and Joe Williams. In 1955, he moved to Houston with his beloved late wife, Audrey, and one young daughter, Melanie. He was to serve as Director of the Baptist Student Union at Texas Southern University. Just a few years later, in 1962, he founded Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, where he served as pastor for 42 years. Upon his retirement in 2004 the congregation conferred upon him the title and honor of Founding Pastor Emeritus for his stellar years of service and leadership. Beyond the walls of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, Lawson has helped change the face of Houston, by leading the battle to desegregate the city. He joined the national civil rights movement led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by setting up a local office of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Dr. King remained a close friend of Lawson’s, until his untimely death. He was part of a powerful trio of religious leaders, including the late Rabbi Samuel Karff and the late Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza, who were dubbed the Three Amigos. They tackled many of the city’s major issues including the homelessness, racism and inequality, even the creation of a public defender’s office, among so many other efforts on behalf of the poor and disenfranchised. Lawson, in particular, was known to help build bridges between the powerful and the powerless, as a champion of social justice and community service. We are so grateful to God for the life and legacy of Bill Lawson, and we ask for your prayers for his family, including three surviving daughters, Melanie, Cheryl and Roxanne, his granddaughters Robyn and Raven; his two great grandsons, Amadeus and Ronin, his extended family, and the entirety of his beloved Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church. Special word of thanks to the current pastor, Dr. Marcus D. Cosby and his ministerial staff.

Early voting for the May 28 Primary Runoff Elections starts on Monday, May 20

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday, May 17, 2024 Contact: Rosio Torres-Segura Rosio.Torres-Segura@cco.hctx.net media@vote.hctx.net Early Voting for the May 28 Primary Runoff Elections Begins May 20 (Houston, TX)—Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth announces that early voting for the May 28 Primary Runoff Elections starts on Monday, May 20. Be aware that these elections offer only five days of early voting. Voters can cast their ballots at any 50 early voting locations across Harris County from May 20 to May 24, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. “Primary elections are how the Republican and Democratic parties determine who their respective nominees will be for the November general election,” explained Clerk Hudspeth, the county’s chief election official. “The May 28 Primary Runoff Elections are held to determine the winner for the contests that no candidate received more than 50 percent of votes during the March 5 primaries.” Texas has open primaries, meaning voters do not have to register or affiliate with a political party to vote. Although voters may choose to cast a ballot in either the Republican or Democratic primary, voters must vote in the same party’s elections during the same primary election cycle (March 5 primaries and May 28 runoff elections). If a voter did not cast a ballot in either party’s primary election during the March 5 Joint Primary Elections, they may choose which party’s runoff election to participate in on May 28. “The important thing for voters to remember is that they must vote in the same party’s runoff election that they voted in during the March 5 primaries,” said Clerk Hudspeth. “If a voter cast their ballot in the Republican primary on March 5, then they can only participate in the Republican runoff election. The same is true for Democratic primary voters.” The address where a voter is registered and which party’s primary they chose to vote in determines what contests will be on the ballot. Voters can view and print their personalized sample ballot to take to the polls on the Harris Votes website. Not all Republican voters in Harris County will have a contest on their May 28 Republican Primary Runoff election ballot. Only Republican voters residing in Congressional District 7 or Congressional District 29 can vote in the Republican Primary Runoff election. All Democratic voters in Harris County have at least three countywide contests on their ballot, including the Justice, 14th County Court of Appeals District, Place 3, 486th Judicial District Judge, and County Tax Assessor-Collector. Voters registered within the applicable districts may also vote in contests for State Senator District 15, State Representative District 139, State Representative District 146, and Constable 5. Additional election information is available at www.HarrisVotes.com. For news and updates on social media, follow @HarrisVotes.

Juneteenth Parade Acres Homes - thank you efamily member Janice Weaver for Sharing

Dear Faith, Community Leaders, Groups, Organizations,

Juneteenth is such an important day in our country's history. It marks the end of slavery in Confederate states and commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans.

I think it's crucial to reflect on the struggles and triumphs that have shaped our nation and honor the resilience of those who fought for liberation. We still have a journey towards equality and justice, but Juneteenth is a time to celebrate our progress and come together to create a future where everyone is treated fairly and equally.

We are overjoyed to share that our organization has received an exclusive invitation, from the esteemed former Mayor Sylvester Turner of Houston, TX, to creatively direct and spearhead the annual Juneteenth parade in the vibrant Acres Homes area. This invitation fills us with gratitude and a deep sense of responsibility to enhance this important event!

It is the 16th Annual Juneteenth Parade—Acres Home and Jubilee Festival Celebration. Our Theme: Freedom cannot be taken for granted, but Nurtured, Preserved, and Protected. I just wanted to share some information about the upcoming Juneteenth Parade Acres Home Festival and Celebration. It's an annual event where churches and congregations come together to celebrate Juneteenth by selecting a block along the parade route.

This year, the event will take place on June 15, 2024, at 10 am and will commence at the Acres Home Multi-Purpose Center located at 6719 West Montgomery Road, Houston, TX 77091. We will march through the lively streets, symbolizing unity and progress, and the parade route will culminate at the iconic Greater Zion Missionary Church
in Houston, TX 77088. Your support and participation are greatly appreciated in upholding the essence of Juneteenth.

Can we count on you to make this event a resounding success? Thank you, Janice Weaver, Adopt the Block Coordinator Teresa Brewer, BHS President Black Heritage Society dba Martin Luther King Jr. Parade Foundation Inc. 501 © 3 400 Sam Houston Parkway E Suite 210 Houston, Texas 77060 http://www.blackheritagesociety.net Est 1974
