On September 2, 1934, George Nathaniel Wyche was born as the fourth child, and second son of Turner Nathaniel Wyche and Loretta Johnson Wyche in Houston, Fifth Ward, Texas. He confessed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized at an early age at Sunlight Baptist Church, a congregation he remained a member of his entire life. It was at Sunlight where he met the love of his life, Rodester Wyche on her first visit to the church upon her move to Houston. Thus sprang a sixty-nine (69) year relationship and sixty-four (64) year marriage.

George was a proud graduate of Phillis Wheatley High School (’53) and Prairie View A&M University where he earned his Bachelor of Science (’57), and Master of Science (’63) degrees in Industrial Education. He began his career in education at Kashmere High School where he taught Woodshop. It was during this early stage of his career that he found his professional passion and purpose- entrepreneurship and real estate.

In 1969, George became a licensed real estate broker and formed G. N. Wyche Realty Company in north Houston. Known by urban legend as “The Mayor of the Northside,” George’s company facilitated homeownership for African Americans in communities such as Scenic Woods, Kashmere Gardens, Fifth Ward, Northwood Manor, Winfield Forest and Humble to name a few. George later diversified his brokerage firm to offer appraisal and property management, and also formed 5-Star Construction Company and Turnkey Mortgage Corp. George was a licensed real estate broker for 50 years.

In addition to the success of his businesses, George was committed to the growth and development of African Americans in the real estate profession. George served as the 11th President of the Houston Black Real Estate Association (HBREA) (1971-1972), and later served several terms as a member of its Board of Directors. The legacy of his leadership is recognized by the Presidential Award which bears his name, being bestowed upon the conclusion of every HBREA president’s term of office. On the national level, George served several terms with distinction as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB), as well as the National Society of Real Estate Appraisers (NSREA).

A dedicated community servant, George was appointed to several boards and commissions at the state and municipal levels. He was appointed by Mayor Kathy Whitmire to the first panel of appraisers tasked with reappraising the value of all properties of the City of Houston. He subsequently became the first African American to serve as Chairman of the Board of the Harris County Appraisal District (HCAD), his fifteen year (1984-1999) tenure remains the longest in HCAD history.

George was preceded in death by his mother, Loretta Wyche; father, Turner Wyche, Sr.; brothers, Turner Wyche, Jr. and Bobby S. Wyche, Sr., and; sister, Mary Wyche Houston.

George leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication. He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Rodester Wyche; his children, George N. Wyche, Jr., Esq. (Vanessa) and Estrella Richardson (Donald); sister, Betty Wyche Middleton; grandchildren George N. Wyche, III., Lyleila Richardson and Sophia Richardson; great-granddaughter, Isley Faye Taylor, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws, friends, protégées and colleagues.
