Empowering Our Youth Through Knowledge & Awareness

2016 Teen Summit

Saturday, April 2, 2016

Marshall High School

9:00 AM - 3:30 PM

Greetings, We are gearing up for our 2nd annual Breaking the Cycle Teen Summit.  Our planning team, which includes representation from the Fort Bend Women's Center and the Xi Kappa Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, has been meeting monthly to ensure we have a dynamic and motivating event this year.  We are excited about arming the youth of our community with the knowledge they need to help Break the Cycle!

This year, we are planning for 100 teens and have invited the students from Thurgood Marshall and Willowridge High Schools to join us.  While we will touch on some of the topics we covered last year, we will also include new topics like a law enforcement and self-defense session for the girls and a Go to High School, Go to College and sex education (Project Alpha) session for the boys .  We will end the day with a group conversation on the topic of Consent.  We've seen this issue highlighted in the news several times this past year with incidents that have involved students in this same age range.  We felt like this was an important dialogue we needed to have with our youth!  While we realize some of these subjects may be sensitive for some parents, it will be presented in a completely age-appropriate manner by trained facilitators!

To ensure that parents are wholly informed of the topics that will be covered that day and for planning purposes, all students must register using the link below and turn in a signed parental permission slip in order to participate.

We are also asking that parents who would like to attend the Parent Session (12:45 - 3:00 PM) register as well.  This will allow us to get an accurate count prior to the event.  The turn out for the parent session was not as high as we would have liked last year, so we're requesting your assistance in publicizing the session this year.  The feedback we got from attendees in 2015 was that the session was

very informative and impactful!
