Support Space Exploration? Volunteers Needed for 51-Day HERA Study (compensation provided)

JSC Test Subject Support is recruiting volunteers for a 51-day study to simulate flight operations and confinement. Subjects will spend 30 days in confined habitation in the Human Exploration Research Analog (HERA) facility at JSC. Researchers will collect blood, urine and saliva; study personal behaviors; and evaluate team cohesion, cognition and communication.

This opportunity is for healthy, non-smoking volunteers between the ages of 30 and 55. Volunteers must pass a JSC physical and psychological assessment to qualify. Subjects must take no medications, have no dietary restrictions, have a BMI of 29 or less, be 74 inches or less tall and have no history of sleepwalking. Subjects must have highly technical skills and a master's degree in a science, technology, engineering and math discipline and equivalent years of experience or military experience.

Volunteers will be compensated. (Some restrictions to NASA civil servants and contractors. Contact your Human Resources department for your company's policy.)

Human Exploration Research Analog-HERA

The Human Exploration Research Analog (HERA), formerly known as the Deep Space Habitat, was transferred from the JSC Engineering Directorate to HRP in FY2013. This unique modular three-story habitat was designed and created through a series of university competitions and was previously used in the Desert Research and Technology Studies in the Arizona desert.

The HERA will provide a high-fidelity research venue for scientists to use in addressing risks and gaps associated with human performance during spaceflight. Historically, the habitat was used for exploration engineering systems demonstrations. In its new role, the HERA will serve as an analog for simulation of isolation, confinement, and remote conditions of mission exploration scenarios.

Studies suitable for this analog may include behavioral health and performance assessments, communication and autonomy studies, human factors evaluations, and exploration medical capabilities assessments and operations.

Dr. Stephon Alexander "The Jazz of Physics" Friday Nov. 13th 9:30-10:30am Bldg 1 room 360 (JSC Employees)

Dr. Stephon Alexander, who has been featured on PBS NOVA, the Discovery network, National Geographic Explorers, is a theoretical physicist specializing in the interface between cosmology, particle physics and quantum gravity (String Theory and Loop Quantum Gravity). He is also a professional jazz saxophonist and recording artist, critically acclaimed for his recent album collaboration with Erin Rioux. His interests include STEM outreach to youth through the nexus of music and physics. His upcoming book, “The Jazz of Physics” will be released in Spring 2016.

Dr. Stephon Alexander, Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy, currently serves as the Ernest Everett Just 1907 Professor of Natural Sciences at Dartmouth University. Previous faculty positions include Penn State and Haverford College, and postdoctoral fellowships at Imperial College, London and The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. He received his BSc from Haverford College and PhD from Brown University.

In the summer of 2012 Rioux collaborated with Trinidadian-American astrophysicist & saxophonist Stephon Alexander to create their collaborative record Here Comes Now, out on August 4 of 2014 Rioux’s record label Connect.^{[23][24][25][26][27]} The album features no-wave artist Arto Lindsay and will explore the connection betweenscience and music, namely the creation of the universe.^{[23][24][28][29]}

Here Comes Now was given a positive score of 7.2 by Pitchfork (Pitchfork Media) before the album was even released. Pitchfork said

Excerpts from the Letter from our Center Director Astronaut Dr. Ellen Ochoa on the 15th Anniversary of ISS

This letter below went to all JSC Employees - when Maria my daughter was in the womb I was working on the ISS Redesign Team in Crystal City, VA. under the future ISS Commander Shepherd - 7 days a week of reviews and wow... see below! 

Today marks the 15 year anniversary of continuous human presence aboard the International Space Station.  On Nov. 2, 2000, Commander Bill Shepherd and Russians Sergei Krikalev and Yuri Gidzenko opened the hatch of their Soyuz and floated into a bare-bones space station.  Since then, it has grown to larger than a six-bedroom house with solar panels that generate as much as 90 kilowatts of power to support the six crew who live and work there and the 52 computers that run constantly.

It takes a remarkable and dedicated team to keep a home and laboratory -- 250 miles off the Earth -- safe and operating. Congratulations to all who work, or have worked, supporting the International Space Station! Whether you are a flight controller on console, an engineer who makes sure the spacecraft is safe and sound, or an administrative assistant juggling travel plans to the many countries in our international partnership, I hope you recognize the important role you have played.

Thanks to your work, crew members have conducted more than 1,700 different investigations to advance science, research and technology development and have taken more than 1 million images of Earth.  To learn more, visit the new 15^th anniversary website.  Plus, NASA is using the hashtag #15YearsOnStation in social media to share the story. There also are several opportunities to Spot the Station this week in Houston and around the world. Please take a moment to visit the site and then share with your family and friends.
