NASA High School Aerospace Scholars-FREE ALL EXPENSE PAID VISIT TO NASA THIS SUMMER!!

The High School Aerospace Scholars application is now open at: http://has.aerospacescholars.org.
High School Aerospace Scholars (HAS) is a NASA unique opportunity for juniors who are interested in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) at no cost to participants.
Selected students will participate in an interactive, online course during the school year that culminates in an all-expense-paid trip to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in the summer. During the online course, students will investigate space exploration challenges by creating technical drawings, solving math problems, and participating in discussion forums with NASA engineers and scientists. Texas certified teachers guide students through the online curriculum and grade their work. After a competitive review of online material completed and submitted, selected students are invited to Johnson Space Center. Throughout this six day trip, participants will work with NASA mentors to complete engineering design challenges and plan a mission to Mars. Students will be briefed on the past, present, and future of space exploration by NASA engineers, scientists, and special guests while touring NASA’s facilities.

Now and Forever: The Journey Never Ends

The Art of Floyd Newsum

September 17-November 3, 2016

! Floyd Newsum’s thought-provoking environments project strong and vibrant

colors with lots of energy, invoking a wide range of viewer emotions. His

work at its best, with subject matter that centers on political statements,

world events and cultural climates, presents us with spiritual and philosophical

challenges. Although he has confessed that his use of symbols like the

bird, dog, and ladder have personal meaning to him, he has consistently resisted
presenting them as a concrete narrative for the viewer. Newsum

suggests symbolic interpretation has meaning for us within the fluid contexts

of our lives; best understood as the moving forwardness of our singular

journeys that ultimately transition but never end, that are Now and Forever.
!

!

!
! Floyd Newsum, a

painter and printmaker for over four decades, has been in

over 80 solo and group exhibitions, with his work displayed at the Taft Museum

in Cincinnati; Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans; Studio Museum in

Harlem, New York; Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; Museum of Fine

Arts Houston; Philadelphia Museum of Arts; Polk Museum, Lakeland Florida;
and the David C. Driskell Center, University of Maryland College Park. !

His works are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian National Museum

of African History and Culture, Washington DC; Philadelphia Museum

of Arts; Museum of Fine Arts Houston; Art Museum at Arizona State University

in Tempe, Arizona; David C. Driskell Center, University of Maryland College

Park; Art Museum of South Texas; and other museums and institutions.

His works have been published in catalogs, books and magazines. Although

known for his paintings on paper, he has created prints, drawing and sculptures,
the latter the medium for four of his six public art commissions. !

Floyd Newsum is a Houstonian by way of Memphis. Currently a University of

Houston Downtown Art Instructor, he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the

Memphis Academy of Arts and a Master of Fine Arts from the Tyler School of

Art, Temple University.

NASA INTERNSHIPS -- PATHWAYS Program

We are preparing to post several job announcements for our Pathways Intern Program.  Our announcements will be posted to www.usajobs.gov from September 12-16th. Students can prepare to apply now by developing a profile in USAJobs and creating a notification for NASA Johnson Space Center Pathways Intern opportunities.

What is the Pathways Intern Program?
The NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) Pathways Intern Program (formerly known as co-op program) follows a cooperative education model where current undergraduate and graduate students gain valuable work experience on an alternating school/work basis, and serves as a pipeline for our future full-time employees. Each work tour you will rotate into a different functional area at JSC, this allows you to try out different career paths while you are still in school and decide what you want to do after graduation. Each time you come for a work rotation you'll be assigned a mentor who will work side-by-side with you to make sure that you have a meaningful project and the tools/knowledge to complete it. Additionally, Interns are able to receive the same benefits as full-time employees such as bi-weekly pay, insurance, and paid time-off.

What Type of Students is NASA Looking for?
