Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (IAGTE) 2019 - 7th, 8th, 9th Graders and Parents Society of Women Engineers

Registration is now open for the Society of Women Engineers Houston Area (SWE-HA) chapter's signature outreach event: Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (IAGTE) 2019. Thanks efamily member Sandra Alridge for sharing!

Who: 7th, 8th and 9th grade female students; Parents/Educators
When: Saturday, November 16th, 2019 9:00 am - 3:30 pm
Where: University of Houston, Main Campus
Event page/Registration: http://www.houstonswe.org/IAGTE (cut and paste into your browser)

IAGTE is a day established to help young women understand the opportunities available in the field of engineering. IAGTE activities include participating in hands-on, engineering related activities throughout the day.

We are looking to you to recommend female students who would benefit from this exposure to engineering. Registration is only available online through the event website, http://www.houstonswe.org/IAGTE. We highly recommend submitting the registration form online as soon as possible as we will wait list students/groups once we hit our maximum capacity.

In addition, alongside our IAGTE program for students, there will be a Parent Educator Program (PEP) for parents and educators. The program will highlight innovative education tactics to teach girls STEM and keep them engaged. During the program participants learn about engineering careers, scholarships, college admission and resources, network with SWE members as well as other parents and educators.

This is a free event and we encourage schools to sponsor their students attending this event.Teachers/Parents are not required to stay with the students throughout the day; however, there is a closing program that we encourage parents to attend.

If you have any questions, please email me at swe.ha.iagte@gmail.com

Sincerely,
Tamara Rodriguez-Diaz

Congress introduced the FUTURE Act to save the future of STEM education at our Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

The FUTURE Act not only extends vital funding from the federal government for HBCUs but also extends funding for Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) and other Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) to help them also offer quality academic programs in the STEM fields.
Education is the key to all success in the United States and HBCUs punch well above their weight not only in their impact on their local communities but also in their states by ensuring that low-income, first generation college students are prepared to succeed. According to an economic impact report produced by UNCF, the impact of HBCUs on their regional economies included an employment impact of 134,090 jobs; a work-life earnings of $130 billion for HBCU students; and a total economic impact of $14.8 billion.

Furthermore, HBCUs represent 8.5% of the four-year institutions across the 21 states and territories they are located in. Of these states and territories, HBCUs enroll, on average, 24% of all black undergraduates pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a college or university; graduate 26% of all black bachelor’s degree recipients; and award 32% of STEM degrees to black students. In fact, across the entire country, HBCUs enroll 10% of the black undergraduates, produce 17% of all black college graduates with bachelor’s degrees and graduate 21% of black students with bachelor’s degrees in STEM fields.

HBCUs, MSIs and TCUs collectively serve over four million students, accounting for more than one-quarter of all undergraduates and a large share of all students of color. Funding for these programs expire September 30, 2019, so the time to act is now. If this funding expires, these institutions would lose access to $2.55 billion dollars!

“A mind is a terrible thing to waste, but a wonderful thing to invest in.”® An investment in HBCUs and other MSIs is not only an investment in a better future for students, but a can’t-go-wrong investment in the economic health and energy of the United States.

Health and Safety After a Flood
There are a number of health concerns related to flooding and the recovery period. Here are some tips to keep you and your family healthy and safe.

Safe Cleanup: During cleanup, you should wear protective safety gear; protect your back during heavy lifting; stay hydrated, and watch for signs of heat exhaustion. People with compromised immune systems, allergies, and asthma should avoid taking part in cleanup due to potential mold exposure and other possible health hazards.

Mosquitoes: The floodwaters can create multiple, large breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Take additional precautions to prevent mosquito borne illness by wearing insect repellent and protective clothing while working outdoors and avoid being outside when mosquitoes are most active. If possible, remove any standing water from your property.

Emotional Health: Flooding can be a stressful and traumatic event. The Disaster Distress Hotline is available 24/7. Call 1-800-985-5990 or text TalkWithUs to 66746 to connect with a trained crisis counselor.

College GPA Calculator & all Grade Tipsm- Use this to plan to raise your GPA

https://gpacalculator.net/college-gpa-calculator/

Really neat online tool! Most internships are limited to 3.0 GPA or better. Some programs require 3.5 GPA or higher. Students consider not graduating if you are very close to the 3.0, and take a few more classes in order to not limit your eligibility for scholarships, internships, jobs and other special programs!

Explore the site - at https://gpacalculator.net/final-grade-calculator/ you can put in your current grade, the weight of the final and figure out what score you need to get the grade you want! Pretty cool!

Kots more! Including the scores and grades needed for college admissions at various colleges!(always double check college sites!)

Another site you can put in the grades for your class and the weight of the assignment to see how you doing.. and what grade you need on the final http://www.benegg.net/grade_calculator.html

TA-NEHISI COATES Oct 29 - Get Tickets Before they sell out!

https://inprinthouston.org/event/inprint-ta-nehisi-coates-reading/

Info Below From the Imprint website... https://inprinthouston.org/event/inprint-ta-nehisi-coates-reading/#tickets-anchor

Tickets for this reading include a copy of Ta-Nehisi Coates’s new novel The Water Dancer (for pickup at the reading). Please note that Mr. Coates will not be participating in a book signing.

Reading followed by an on-stage interview – conducted by award-winning journalist for ABC 13 News Melanie Lawson.

TA-NEHISI COATES’S “visceral, eloquent, and beautifully redemptive” language has been hailed by the legendary Toni Morrison as “required reading,” and The New York Observer calls him “the single best writer on the subject of race in the United States.” Coates’s groundbreaking book Between the World and Me—an essay in the form of a letter to his son—was a #1 New York Times bestseller, won the National Book Award and a NAACP Image Award, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Critics Circle Award, and was on several end of the year best books lists. The Boston Globe describes it as “echoing Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man” and “written in the tradition of James Baldwin.” A former national correspondent for The Atlantic, Coates has been praised for his journalism on cultural, political, and social issues and his recognized pieces include “The Black Family in the Age of Mass Incarceration,” “The Case for Reparations,” “Fear of a Black President,” and “This is How We Lost to the White Man.” In 2017, his essays were published in We Were Eight Years in Power, an “emotionally charged, deftly drafted, and urgently relevant” (Kirkus Reviews) collection examining the nation’s cultural and political landscape during the Obama administration. Coates, a MacArthur fellow, is also the author of the memoir The Beautiful Struggle and the current author for Black Panther and Captain America comic series. He will read from his highly anticipated debut novel The Water Dancer. “In prose that sings and imagination that soars,” Publisher Weekly says with this novel, “Coates further cements himself as one of this generation’s most important writers, tackling one of America’s oldest and darkest periods with grace and inventiveness. This is bold, dazzling, and not to be missed.”

Flood Recommendations from the City of Houston

Houston Health Department offers flood safety recommendations after Tropical Storm Imelda | 09-20-2019
HOUSTON - The Houston Health Department recommends people in the Houston-area keep safety in mind during recovery from flooding due to Tropical Depression Imelda.

“Good hygiene, food safety and properly sanitizing a flooded home are of the utmost importance the next few days,” said Dr. David Persse, local health authority for Houston Health Department.

The department recommends people follow the flood safety precautions below.

Food Safety

Do not eat any food that may have come into contact with floodwater. If cans have come in contact with floodwater or storm water, remove the labels, wash the cans, and dip them in a solution of 1 cup (8 oz/250 mL) of bleach in 5 gallons of water.

Cleaning and Sanitizing Your Home

When rain or flood waters get into your home, take steps to prevent mold growth. First, wash surfaces with soap and warm clean water to remove dirt and debris. Next, sanitize surfaces with household bleach. Clean it with a solution of 1 cup household liquid bleach per 5 gallons of water.

Remember:

Keep children and pets out of the affected area until cleanup is complete.
Remove and discard items that cannot be washed and disinfected (such as, mattresses, carpeting, carpet padding, rugs, upholstered furniture, cosmetics, stuffed animals, baby toys, pillows, foam-rubber items, books, wall coverings, and most paper products).

Remove and discard drywall and insulation that has been contaminated with floodwaters.
Thoroughly clean all hard surfaces (such as flooring, concrete, molding, wood and metal furniture, counter tops, appliances, sinks, and other plumbing fixtures) with hot water and laundry or dish detergent.
Help the drying process by using fans, air conditioning units, and dehumidifiers.

Tetanus Shot
People seven years of age and older with puncture wounds or cuts that were exposed to flood water or dirt may be at risk for contracting tetanus. They will need a tetanus shot if they have not had one in the past ten years. Please consult your primary care physician or your medical home. Exposure to flood water without a wound or skin injury is not a risk for tetanus.

Good Hygiene

Practice good hygiene (handwashing) after contact with flood waters.

Do not allow children to play in flood water areas.
Wash children's hands frequently (always before meals).
Do not allow children to play with toys that have been contaminated by flood water and have not been disinfected.

MAYOR SYLVESTER TURNER ANNOUNCES
CITY MATCHING GRANTS PROGRAM

Grants support neighborhood improvement projects

Community-based organizations invited to apply

Application Deadline: November 1, 2019

Mayor Sylvester Turner, City Council and the Department of Neighborhoods announce the 2019-2020 Neighborhood Matching Grants Program to help neighborhood-based nonprofit organizations fund projects that improve the appearance of neighborhoods, cultivate volunteerism, and promote community pride.

The program provides dollar-for-dollar matching grants ranging from $500 to $5,000 from City Council members’ discretionary District Service Funds. To qualify, projects must involve residents, provide long-standing benefits to the community, and be accessible to the public. Applicant organizations must identity how the proposed project will be funded and supported in the future. Council members will select the winning proposals.

The application deadline is November 1, 2019. Applications must be complete to be considered, and there will be no exceptions to the deadline.

Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for a matching grant, applicants must be certified as a 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization by the State of Texas or must secure a partnership with a 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) organization to carry out the proposed project. Organizations funded under the program must represent a specific geographic area within Houston city limits.

The Neighborhood Matching Grants Program is administered by the Department of Neighborhoods in partnership with City Council offices. For grant guidelines and the application form, visit www.houstontx.gov/neighborhoods.
