Prairie View A&M University - The Texas Juvenile Crime Prevention Center at Prairie View A&M University is sponsoring the inaugural series of The Darden-Caldwell LeadHERship Series for Girls: 2021 Summer Camp named in honor of its alum, Ms. Phyllis Darden-Caldwell.  This one-day virtual conference is solely dedicated to girls in grades 9th – 12th and their parents or guardians.    A cadre of dynamic, diverse, competent, exciting, passionate, and engaging speakers will talk and generate audience interaction on Leadership, Academics, Social Justice, Health & Wellness, and Advocacy.

This series includes concurrent breakout sessions specifically designed for our student attendees, parent/guardian attendees, and joint sessions for both.

The Series begins promptly on Saturday, August 7th, at 9:30 am and ends at 3:00 pm.  We want the girls attending this series to leave believing their lives are filled with possibilities and understand that success is about overcoming obstacles, setting and achieving goals as well as accepting seemingly insurmountable challenges.  And for our parents or guardians; we want them to be empowered with knowledge and resources to effectively engage in their daughters’ epic journey of life.

Please help us recruit 9th – 12th-grade girls and their parents/guardians to this phenomenal event.  Students must attend with either a parent or guardian, complete the attached application, and return to us as indicated no later than July 26, 2021.  Disseminating the flyer and application to students and parents/guardians who you know will be committed to attend is appreciated.

Main Street Theater Seeks Diversity on its Board per the NAACP thanks Janice Weaver for sharing!

Dear NAACP Houston Branch Leadership,

From time to time we receive requests and invitations for members of our NAACP Leadership to serve in advisory board/panel capacities on a myriad of diversity and inclusion issues or efforts impacting our Houston community.  We've received another such request that I'd like to share with you.

Main Street Theater is launching its inaugural Diversity Panel and I'd like to engage the interest of our leadership team in this effort. Below is an overview of the e-invitation and attached is the Anti-Racist & Anti-Oppressive Guide.  Please review at your earliest opportunity and let me know if you have any interest in serving on Main Street Theater's Diversity Panel.

Thanks in advance for considering - Yolanda

Main Street Theater recognizes that equity, diversity and inclusion are central to our mission of challenging our artists and our community to engage more deeply with the stories and ideas presented on our stages. Our diversity includes, but is not limited to: gender, race, ethnicity, socio-economic, sexual orientation, religion, and those with special needs.

Therefore, it’s important for us to continue to examine and reflect on our relationships, the culture within our community, policies, and practices. As part of this continued focus and to inform our thinking and action, Main Street Theater for Youth has committed to working through a TYA/USA’s guide on diversity and inclusion. To maintain accountability, we are creating a diverse panel of individuals to work through this guide, and we believe NAACP would be a great addition to our diversity panel.

It is my hope that committee members will make the minimum of 18-month commitment, recognizing there will be monthly hybrid meetings (a combination of in-person & virtual attendance) for the first six months, followed by quarterly meetings starting in 2022.

We are seeking diverse perspectives from individuals who share this same passion and vision for our diversity enhanced community! Please see the attached infographic for more in-depth information about our plan to work through the guide.

Respectfully,

Sloane Teagle
