K-12 Educators Get Selected for How to Invent Program

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) invites you to apply to our 3rd Annual National Summer Teacher Institute (NSTI) on Innovation, STEM and Intellectual Property on July 17-22, 2016 at Michigan State University. Fifty teachers from across the US will be selected to participate in the 2016 Class. A goal of this professional development and training program is to help teachers understand how to invent and redesign things through multiple iterations, to democratize and understand the processes and practices of engineering, science, and innovation, and to stimulate student learning about how new products are developed and commercialized by testing prototypes quickly and cost-effectively.

Deadline for submitting your online application is Tuesday, March 15, 2016!

THE USPTO NATIONAL SUMMER TEACHER INSTITUTE:

·  Gives teachers tools to incorporate invention and innovation into their classroom curriculum.

·  Covers practical lesson strategies and student-tested activities that meet NGSS standards.

·  Includes lesson plans highlighting USPTO resources on patents, trademarks, and copyright resources for classroom use.

·  Provides access to a dynamic range of guest speakers, including USPTO experts, inventors, scientists and engineers from the Science of Innovation curriculum, teacher Maker Education ambassadors, and representatives from other federal government agencies and non-profits.

Do you know a teacher who’d like to connect STEM to real world applications in the classroom? Tell them about this program!

WHY TEACHERS SHOULD APPLY:

·  NSTI is designed for K-12 educators.

·  NSTI combines experiential training tools, practices, and project-based learning models.

·  NSTI helps teachers inspire and motivate student achievement in STEM disciplines, by using Intellectual property as both a teaching and learning model.

·  Travel and lodging expenses will be covered for teachers who are selected to participate in this program and reside more than 50 miles from the venue in accordance with Federal Travel Regulations and USPTO travel policy.

Online applications are due March 15, 2016. Instructions are available on the NSTI website.

SPACE IS LIMITED! Apply todayhttp://1.usa.gov/20U4K8V

Sponsor Port City Links Health, Education, Science Fair and Carnival

Dear Friend of the Efamily Blog,

On behalf of the Port City Chapter, The Links, Inc., we would like to invite you to serve as a sponsor for our 11th Annual Health, Education, Science Fair & Carnival at Sunnyside Park on Saturday, March 5, 2016.  Your support is critical to our ability to touch the lives of children and families in our communities.  We continue to receive many positive comments from parents and community members and leaders about what a meaningful experience that the Fair is for everyone who has attended over the years, especially the children.

We are excited to share that over 500 children and adults attended the Fair at Sunnyside Park last year and were introduced to valuable community resources and increasingly important STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education and available careers through interactive exhibits, informational games, prizes, health screenings, brochures and "hands on” experiments!  Students were exposed to a petting zoo with farm animals and pony rides, along with science fair exhibits by student science fair winners—which we hope to continue again this year with your support. This year’s special focus is Heart Health; as heart disease is especially hard hitting in minority communities. In addition, we hope to add additional summer camp vendors and information on free camps to provide parents more options for their youth during the summer.

Your generosity will allow us to continue to strengthen our community and work to eliminate health and education disparities in communities of color. We greatly appreciate you and look forward to working with you this year.

Donors who meet the print deadline of February 26, 2016, will receive recognition on fliers, press releases, Fair Blog, social media site, Port City website, radio announcements, and signage on the day of the event. We hope that you will utilize this mutually beneficial opportunity to support and connect with the Third Ward, Sunnyside and surrounding communities.

Sabrina Loeb, President Port City Chapter

Mary Auzenne, Event Chairman
Donna Blackshear-Reynolds, Event Co-Chairman

Melanie Flowers, Sponsor Chairman

INTERN AT NASA INFO (even if it delays your college graduation!)

ALERT! Some students don't like to participate in COOP or internships because it will delay getting that diploma! In today's competitive job market it is MUCH better to delay graduation and get an internship that leads to a job than to graduate quickly and not have a job -- it's easier to get a job when you have one than to get a job if unemployed. JUST A FACT! Even if the job you get from the internship is not your dream job, showing you have a track record and were hired or made an offer after your internship is a :PLUS when interviewing for a new job! Companies know that the folks you worked with evaluated your value added and thought enough of your efforts to hire you!

NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) will be opening several job announcements in February for our Pathways Intern Employment Program (a Cooperative Education Program). The JSC Pathways Intern Employment Program allows engineering and business students to gain valuable work experience on an alternating school/work basis, and serves as a pipeline for our future full-time employees.

There will be two job announcements posted this semester:
·        Business Announcement - https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetail/428344200
o   Qualifying majors include: Accounting, Business Administration, Public Administration, Finance, etc.
o   Dates: February 3-10, 2016
·        Engineering Announcement – link not available until February 10th
o   Qualifying majors include: Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineer, Software Engineering, and some Computer Science
o   Dates: February 10-16, 2016
To apply please visit www.usajobs.gov. Attached is a reference guide to help applicants through the application process.

For more information including program requirements, visit our website at: http://pathways.jsc.nasa.gov.

If your major is not included in the Spring 2016 announcement, please check back with us in the Fall to see what opportunities are available!
