Mural 3115 Blodgett honors Reverend John D. Moore, Christia Adair, Heman Sweatt, The Honorable Hattie Mae White, Reverend William Lawson, The Honorable Barbara Jordan, The Honorable Mickey Leland, and The Honorable Ada Edwards

From Commissioner Rodney Ellis
Claiming our place in history is up to us. As Harris County Precinct One Commissioner, I believe it's important to publicly honor those who broke down barriers, fought for equality, confronted bigotry and led movements toward justice. The new Precinct One Sacred Struggles/Vibrant Justice Mural pays tribute to local civil rights leaders who paved a path to opportunity for future generations.

Please join me in dedicating this mural on Monday, November 5, 2018 at 10 a.m. at the historic Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ (3115 Blodgett Street). We will gather on the eve of this important election to honor eight of Houston's civil rights heroes who fought for the right to vote and stood up against hatred, discrimination, and racism.

Because of their dedication, they changed history. The vibrant mural along the Columbia Tap trail near Texas Southern University (TSU) serves as a reminder of Houston's civil rights history and the opportunities these leaders created for us through their hard work and sacrifice. Created with jewel-toned paint in a stained-glass design with images of local civil rights heroes in tile mosaics,

the mural honors Reverend John D. Moore, Christia Adair, Heman Sweatt, The Honorable Hattie Mae White, Reverend William Lawson, The Honorable Barbara Jordan, The Honorable Mickey Leland, and The Honorable Ada Edwards.
