After decades of unequal justice and a costly legal battle, Harris County is taking final steps to end its unconstitutional and unsafe misdemeanor cash bail system. The Thurgood Marshall School of Law Civil Rights Society and Harris County Precinct One will host a panel discussion on misdemeanor bail reform this Saturday, November 2, 2019 at Texas Southern University's Thurgood Marshall School of Law at 10 am (3100 Cleburne Street, Houston, TX 77004).
Harris County's misdemeanor cash bail practices were among the most oppressive and discriminatory in the country for decades. Unfortunately, there are people intent on stopping progress to perpetuate an unjust and harmful system of mass incarceration. Bail reform opponents are using disinformation and scare tactics to mislead the public on what bail reform does and why it is needed.
We'll go over the harms of misdemeanor cash bail, the terms of the settlement agreement and tell the truth about bail reform.This is a truly historic moment for our county. It's an opportunity for Harris County to be a national leader in criminal justice reform.
