HCAS will host the Texas premiere of this riveting film about a British-Pakastani rapper struck down by an autoimmune disease which forces him to grapple with his own childhood in the UK and his family’s cultural heritage through visions of his father’s flight from India during the partition of India and Pakistan. The film stars Riz Ahmed and will be attended by the director Bassam Tariq who will offer opening remarks before the drive-in screening. This is part of the Urbana section.

This legendary midnight movie sensation is a giddily entertaining, mesmerizingly gory classic of East-meets-West grindhouse mayhem. This work is based on a manga series created by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima, and it firmly embedded samurai mythology within American pop culture. This is part of the Urbana section.

In 1800s England, acclaimed but unrecognized fossil hunter Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) works alone on the rugged Southern coastline. With the days of her famed discoveries behind her, she now searches for common fossils to sell tourists to support herself and her ailing mother. When a wealthy visitor entrusts Mary with the care of his wife Charlotte Murchison (Saoirse Ronan), she cannot afford to turn his offer down. Proud and relentlessly passionate about her work, Mary initially clashes with her unwelcome guest, but despite the distance between their social class and personalities, an intense bond begins to develop, compelling the two women to determine the true nature of their relationship.

Sunday, November 22, 7:30pm at the Houston Ballet Drive-In
Co-presented by Houston Ballet and Rice Cinema
The film takes place at the Maca correctional facility in Abidjan run by inmates and dominated by superstition. Upon the rising of a red moon, a newly arrived prisoner is selected by the autocratic Lord Black Beard to assume the position of “Roman” (storyteller). Like Scheherazade in Arabian Nights, the new prisoner must entertain his fellow inmates with wild tales or risk his own life, so he shares the story of Zama, his old friend who became a legendary crime boss. This is part of the Urbana section.

80's Night(s) at #HCAF2020
HCAF 2020 includes references to 80's icons, from clips of 1983's Tender Mercies in the recently added film Horton Foote: The Road to Home, to the iconic 80's night at Numbers that still continues virtually each Friday through its 40 year run. These programs highlight some of the memorable moments of the 1980s and give virtual companion to the Drive In features.

Directed by Joyce Chopra, based on the short story from Joyce Carol Oates, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?”

Friday I’m In Love: A Night at Numbers

Marcus Pontello crosses generations to explore the history of Numbers Nightclub, a counter-cultural landmark in Houston, Texas that has been open since 1978. Told through the voices of those who have helped envision Numbers and those who continue to cultivate and expand its legacy of acceptance, this love letter of a documentary pays tribute to the music and the people that keep Numbers alive every Friday night. This work-in-progress excerpt screening will be accompanied by a multi-media panel discussion and LIVE DJ set by DJ ESTEFF (Stephanie St. Sanchez).

Horton Foote: The Road to Home

Horton Foote: The Road To Home is a documentary that chronicles the creative journey of acclaimed Texas writer Horton Foote through his own eyes and voice at the end of his life. Foote, who was born and raised in Wharton, Texas, went on to become a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, the winner of two Academy Awards for screenwriting, an Emmy Award for television writing, and was recipient of the National Medal of Arts among numerous other theatrical and literary prizes. His long and successful 70-year career of writing consisted primarily of stories set in the small town of Harrison, Texas, a fictitious version of Wharton. Horton was known for his subtle yet deeply-layered and profound storytelling -- about family, human connections, struggles, resilience and redemption.
