Kirkland & Ellis donating $12.5M in Fees Awarded in HBCU Case Kirkland & Ellis, with a team led by shareholder Michael D. Jones, represented alumni and supporters of Maryland’s historically Black colleges and universities as they challenged systemic underfunding of the schools by the state government, is donating $12.5 million to colleges and nonprofits from the fees it was awarded when the case settled. As part of the settlement, Maryland agreed to pay $22 million in legal fees and costs, with $12.5 million going to Kirkland & Ellis. The remainder went to the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law, which also provided legal representation for plaintiffs in the lawsuit.
Freeman Hrabowski Given John Hope Franklin Award Dr. Freeman Hrabowski III, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, has been awarded the John Hope Franklin Award by Diverse: Issues In Higher Education. Hrabowski, who received the award in a virtual ceremony on Nov. 16, is one of the nation’s longest-serving university presidents. He began his tenure at UMBC as vice provost in 1987 and became the university’s president in 1992. Before his tenure at UMBC, he served as dean and provost at nearby Coppin State University, an historically Black college. He will retire at the end of this academic year.
Jackie Stone Named to Lawdragon's Top 500 Corporate Lawyers List Jackie Stone, a partner in McGuireWoods' Richmond office, has been recognized among Lawdragon’s 500 Leading Corporate Employment Lawyers of America for her work representing clients in employment-related litigation and labor law matters and helping companies maintain global workforces during the COVID-19 pandemic. Jackie, a partner in the firm’s Securities & Capital Markets Department, assists companies in immigration-related matters as well as helping foreign companies and organizations establish U.S. operations and coordinate the transfer of key executives.

With nearly 40 years of service, her contributions have left an indelible mark on the Corporation, including many changes that will benefit the FDIC workforce and the government far into the future. LaRue Robinson Named to Crain's Notable Military Veteran Executives List LaRue Robinson, a litigation partner in Willkie Farr & Gallagher’s Chicago office, was named by Crain’s Chicago Business as a 2021 Notable Military Veteran Executive. In 2020, he headed an internal investigation of reported workplace racial mistreatment and was co-counsel in a pro bono case with the ACLU and NAACP Legal Defense Fund regarding South Carolina’s absentee voting laws. At Willkie, he leads efforts to increase the recruitment of veterans and, more broadly, helps former JAG Corps lawyers transition to the private sector. He joined the Army as an ROTC scholarship recipient at Cornell University and rose to the rank of captain while serving in the JAG Corps.
Brandi Howard Elected Partner at McGuire Woods Brandi Howard has been elected partner at McGuireWoods. She is a member of the firm's Government Investigations & White Collar Litigation Practice Group. Resident in the D.C. office, Brandi defends clients against allegations of False Claims Act violations and represents clients in internal investigations and enforcement actions involving healthcare fraud, antitrust issues and anti-money laundering issues.
William Toles Moves to Munsch Hardt Kopf & Harr William M. Toles, has joined the Dallas office of Munsch Hardt Kopf & Harr, P.C. as a Shareholder. William is a member of the litigation practice group, where he concentrates on commercial litigation and tort litigation, including complex premises liability, negligence and transportation matters. He has successfully tried more than 60 civil jury trials to verdict in areas such as wrongful death, breach of contract and general negligence cases.
Haydee M. Rodriguez Named Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at Sullivan Cove Consultants Ms. Rodriguez’s prior positions include political appointments by former Baltimore Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke, U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski and two Maryland Governors. She is the creator and founder of the Latino Providers Network (LPN), a coalition created to better address the concerns of the growing Hispanic/Latino community in Baltimore City, and was executive director of Centro de la Comunidad, Inc. She also led the Public Broadcasting Service‘s (PBS) Diversity Initiative in 2007, producing a strategic plan to increase diversity and inclusion in front of and behind the camera.
Luther Battiste Inducted Into NCSC Burger Society Luther J. Battiste, III, founding shareholder of Johnson, Toal & Battiste in Columbia, has been inducted into the National Center for State Courts’ (NCSC) Warren E. Burger Society. Named for the former Supreme Court chief justice, the Burger Society honors individuals who have used their time, talent and support to advance the NCSC in exceptional ways. Battiste is currently the past president of the American Board of Trial Advocates. In addition to his decades of legal experience, Battiste served on the Columbia City Council for 15 years, including two terms as mayor pro tempore.
Kendric Cobb Joins AbbVie Kendric Cobb has joined AbbVie, Inc. as Senior Counsel, Litigation, Compliance & Regulatory. In this role, Kendric advises on global employment and labor matters for all corporate functions, R&D, IT, and Commercial teams supporting immunology and oncology product lines. Noni Ellison Interviewed About Tractor Supply's ESG Efforts Noni Ellison, senior VP, GC and corporate secretary at Tractor Supply, was interviewed in Corporate Counsel magazine about her company's environmental, social and governance strategy. Doneene Damon Named One of Delaware’s Top 40 Women in Business Doneene Damon, president of Richards, Layton & Finger, Delaware’s largest law firm, has been named among Delaware’s Top 40 Women in Business by Delaware Today magazine. In addition to serving as Richards Layton’s president, she is co-chair of the firm’s Business Department and chair of the Corporate Trust and Agency Services Group. Doneene focuses her legal practice on the use of Delaware and New York trusts in a wide range of commercial transactions, and represents banks and trust companies in connection with their trust and agency services under Delaware and New York law.
Spiwe Jefferson Publishes Self-Help Book Spiwe Jefferson, Deputy General Counsel, certified mindfulness practitioner, and author, published her debut self-help book, Mindful in 5 – A Year of 5-Minute Meditations for People with No Time. It is a different kind of meditation book that uses fictional characters who experience real life challenges, to guide the reader on a meditative journey through the seasons of life — from Dark, through Dawn, to Day. The book is available on her website and Amazon.
Chris-Tia Donaldson, 1979-2021 Chris-Tia Donaldson, founder and CEO of Thank God it’s Natural (TGIN) haircare, died November 13. Donaldson wrote the book “Thank God I’m Natural: The Ultimate Guide to Caring for Natural Hair,” a No. 1 Amazon bestseller, after struggling to find good resources on caring for her natural hair in the days before social media. She went on to found TGIN in 2011, and within a few years, it could be found on shelves at major retailers nationwide. After her 2015 diagnosis with breast cancer, Donaldson established the TGIN Foundation, with a mission including providing support for uninsured women fighting breast cancer. Prior to starting her own company, Donaldson represented Fortune 500 companies in complex business transactions involving technology and open source code. Willie Phillips Confirmed at FERC The U.S. Senate on Tuesday unanimously approved Willie Phillips to fill a vacant slot at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, restoring the FERC's full complement of five commissioners. Willie currently chairs the Public Service Commission of the District of Columbia. His confirmation gives Democrats a 3-2 edge over Republicans at the agency.
Shipt Names Linda Seal Chief Legal Officer Shipt, the fast-growing third-party delivery service owned by Target, has hired longtime Home Depot executive Linda Seal as chief legal officer. Linda spent 16 years with The Home Depot, most recently as associate general counsel and assistant secretary.
Jamal Haughton Joins MSG Entertainment as General Counsel Jamal Haughton is joining Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corp. as executive vice president and general counsel. Jamal joins MSG from Samsung Electronics America, where he has been senior vice president and general counsel since 2016. In addition to leading the legal department, Haughton will direct the company’s corporate and business legal affairs. This includes managing the development, negotiation and execution of material business transactions.
Brian Nurse Named General Counsel at Cedar Fair Amusement park operator Cedar Fair Entertainment Co. has tapped the former general counsel of World Wrestling Entertainment Brian Nurse as executive vice president, chief legal officer and secretary. Prior to WWE, Nurse served six years as vice president, associate general counsel and secretary at Nestle Waters North America.
Honors for Two Jones Day Attorneys Jihan Walker, a partner in Jones Day's Business & Tort Litigation Practice and resident in the Chicago Office, was included among Crain’s Chicago Business’ “Notable Veteran Executives.” She is is a trial attorney focused on the defense of individual and class action product liability lawsuits and has served as trial counsel on more than 10 trial teams at Jones Day since 2017. Aaron Agenbroad has been elected a Fellow of The College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. Kim Rucker Named to HP Inc. Board HP Inc. announced the appointment of Kim K.W. Rucker to its board of directors. Rucker is the former executive vice president, general counsel and secretary of Andeavor, which was acquired by Marathon Petroleum in 2018. Rucker is a member of the boards of directors for Marathon Petroleum Corporation, Lennox International Inc., and Celanese Corporation. Additionally, she is on the board of directors of Haven for Hope and a member of the board of trustees of Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Alyssa Harvey Dawson Named to AppLovin Board AppLovin Corporation, a marketing software company, announced the appointment of Alyssa Harvey Dawson to its Board of Directors. Alyssa is Chief Legal Officer of Gusto, an HR software provider.
Randy Hayman Appointed to WRF Board Philadelphia Water Department Commissioner and CEO Randy E. Hayman was recently appointed to serve on the Board of the Water Research Foundation, the world’s leading water research and innovation organization. Randy was also appointed to the Board of Directors for the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies and was selected to join LEADERSHIP Philadelphia's Core Class of 2022.  SEC Scholars Information Session, December 8 The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is launching the SEC Scholars Program in the Summer 2022. The program targets currently enrolled students to participate in a paid ten-week summer internship. The internship will begin May 23, 2022 and conclude on July 29, 2022. NBA Magazine Call for Articles, January 5 The National Bar Association is currently seeking articles for the 2022 edition of the National Bar Association Magazine. Articles should be related to the law, and concern topics that are relevant to African Americans. Articles should not exceed 800 words. While all submissions are encouraged, of particular interest for this edition are articles on the topic of civil rights, and economic empowerment.
