About this event

Did you know that you don’t need to be an Astronaut to work in space! There are a huge number of jobs, careers and hobbies that would allow you to work in Space. We will hear from those who work at, and with, The Open University and what they do in space.

We’re giving you the chance to hear from a space lawyer, an icy moons researcher, an engineer and a researcher who studies the Moon. Find out more about our guests below.

• Scott Steele, Research Student with the OU Faculty Business and Law, specialising in Space Law & Governance, International Public Law, International Environmental Law and Public Law

• Devyani Gajjar, Research Student in the OU Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Her research investigates whether space technologies being applied for the Sustainable Development Goals could aid social justice and inclusive development.

• Mark Fox-Powell, a research fellow within the AstrobiologyOU group at The Open University. His research interests centre around the oceans of ice-covered moons in the outer solar system, such as Europa and Ganymede (moons of Jupiter) and Enceladus and Titan (Saturn), which may be habitable today.

• Tara Hayden, is a PhD researcher in the OU Faculty of STEM investigating the stable isotope geochemistry of volatiles in lunar meteorites.

This event will be delivered in a way to make the information easy to understand and is aimed at an audience of:

• Primary and secondary school pupils aged 9 years and above (Key Stage 2 and above)

• Homeschool children

• Parents and carers of children aged 9 years and over

• Anyone interested in learning more about space, astronomy, and astrobiology.

This event will be of interest to anyone with a curious mind about space and astronomy as well as teachers, parents and carers of children in Year 5 (Key Stage 2) and above.

Signing up to this Zoom event allows everyone, whether they are in-school or at home, to ask questions to our team of scientists via live chat on the day.

The event will be hosted in a Zoom webinar format on Friday 7 October 14:00-15:00 GMT.

An email reminder will be sent to you on the morning of the event.

We aim to be as inclusive as possible for all our public-facing events. However, there may be times when an event is for students only, or is aimed at a certain age group- please read the individual event descriptions to find out if it is right for you. We always like to encourage engagement during our events; if you are watching via a social media platform, please use the chat function to share your comments and questions. If you are experiencing technical issues, please email us through Eventbrite- but note, we are a small team and will try our best to respond to queries during a live event.

Please note that while we aim to begin all of our events on time, there might be a slight delay, so stay patient and the event will start shortly. If you are still experiencing issues, try refreshing your browser. Nearly all of our events are recorded and available to watch after- whichever social platform you choose to watch on will also host a recording of the session.
