Harris County Clerk FACTS on Signatures on Ballots

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 21, 2024
Teneshia Hudspeth, Harris County Clerk Statement Regarding
Ballot Signatures

"Voting for the November 5 Elections in Harris County is underway. As Chief Election Official, I want to remind voters that they will see my initials on their ballots during the early voting period and the presiding judge's signature on their ballots on Election Day.

During early voting, the ballot will have my initials (TEH). The Texas Election Code, Sec. 85.0311 reads:

(a) The early voting clerk’s initials shall be placed on the back of each ballot to be used at the polling place.
(b) The early voting clerk shall enter the initials on each ballot or a deputy early voting clerk shall stamp a facsimile of the initials on each ballot.

On Election Day, the ballot will have the presiding judge's signature. The Texas Election Code, Sec. 62.008 reads:

(a)  The presiding judge's signature shall be placed on the back of each ballot to be used at the polling place.

(b)  The judge shall sign each ballot or an election officer shall stamp a facsimile of the judge's signature on each ballot.

I assure voters that either my initials or the presiding judge's signature is required by the Texas Election Code. Any claims to the contrary are misleading, false, and reckless. I encourage voters to visit harrisvotes.com or the Texas Secretary of State’s website for official election information."
