City Links STEM Fair & Carnival at South Central Sportz Opening Day in
Sunnyside Park
Families of the
Sunnyside community will come together for YOUTH BASEBALL and a FUN and
EDUCATIONAL DAY IN THE PARK as a result of partnership sponsors: The Houston
Astros, Schlumberger, A-Rocket Moving, H-E-B, City Council Member Dwight
Boykins, Constable May Walker, South Central Sportz, and Port City Chapter of
The Links, Incorporated. Underwriters include Womack Development, Urgent
Psychiatric Care, and Pinnacle Pediatric Dentistry. Confirmed Special Guests (as
of this printing) will include Congressman Al Green, Darryl Wade of the Astros,
City Council Member Dwight Boykins, Constable May Walker and HISD School Board
Member and Schlumberger Director of Community Affairs Paula Harris.

Opening Day featuring the Port City Links 10th Annual Health, Education,
Science Fair and Carnival.

BACKGROUND
“Youth ages 4-14
will participate in the exciting South Central Sportz Opening Ceremonies this
year at 10 a.m. for the Spring Baseball Season. Several surprise guests are
planned to be on hand for the festivities. We look forward to the 14th season
opening at Sunnyside Park” said Cravon Rogers, President of South Central
Sportz.
“Schlumberger is
proud to be an Astros Community Partner, and we are especially proud that we
have partnered with the Port City Links and South Central Sportz for 7 years to
promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) along with promoting
youth baseball in the community,” said Paula Harris, Director of Community
Affairs at Schlumberger and HISD School Board member.
According to Irene Johnson, President of the
Port City Links, “this community event, which is cosponsored by City
Councilmember Dwight Boykins, has expanded each year with the Port City Links
Health, Education, and Science Fair as an exciting offering, now including
Carnival features such as FREE Rock Climbing, Face Painting, Carnival Games,
Puppet shows, Science Fair Projects, FREE Summer Camp and Health Education
Booths; as well as health screening booths. MD Anderson, METRO, The Aquarium, Radio
One, Houston Museum of Natural Science, NASA, HISD are just a few of the over 40
organizations with booths participating! Special Presentations by the MD
Anderson “Too Kool to Smoke” Puppet Show and the Ensemble Theater. The
Confucius Institute from Texas Southern University will have Tai Chi demonstrations,
Chinese games, and “How To” Calligraphy booths. Schools are invited to
participate in “Health, Education, and Science Fair Attendance Contest” --
visit booths and win equipment and supplies for your school! Over 500
participants of all ages attend this annual community-wide event!” Many booths will have giveaways for children
and adults as well as drawings for door prizes of bikes and HEB gift cards.
