Known as human “computers” at the time, their complex calculations for the center's aeronautical and rocket research before the days of electronic computing helped fuel some of America’s greatest achievements in space, including two historical events: the trajectory of Alan Shepherd’s 1961 trip into space, America’s first; and the 1962 launch of Friendship 7 during which John Glenn became the first American astronaut to orbit the earth. These launches transformed the Space Race, became a symbol of American pride, and led to breakthroughs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) worldwide.
