AJC Houston’s Community of Conscience – a group of diverse leaders committed to nine principles and a pluralistic society based on common values - will host two town hall meetings this August.

The first evening, Wednesday, August 12 at 7pm, will be devoted to Houston’s Black historical legacy since the 1960s. Presenters include Alison Leland, Gene Locke, and Judson Robinson III.

The second evening, August 19th at 7pm, will focus on three of the economic inequalities facing the Black community: education; housing; and health care. This program will feature Rabbi Steven Morgen, Amanda Edwards as moderator, Shad Bogany, Dr. Joseph Gathe, and Secretary Rod Paige.

Following the second night presentations, participants will be divided into three groups to discuss one of the issues and ways for individuals to become engaged in “advocacy” oriented endeavors.

The town hall series is co-sponsored by the Asian Chamber of Commerce-Houston, Boniuk Institute for Religious Tolerance at Rice, Houston Area Urban League, Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston, Islamic Society of Greater Houston, Muslim Jewish Advisory Council and OCA-Greater Houston.

Alison Leland
Alison Leland teaches Political Science in the Honors College at the University of Houston. She leads an accelerated pre- law partnership with the UH Law Center, an alliance with the Smithsonian Institute and the Osgood Center for International Studies in Washington, D.C. She is a recent recipient of the Steele teaching award. A graduate of Spelman College and the Georgetown University Law Center, the first phase of her career was spent in investment banking with Lehman Brothers prior to joining the University. She currently serves on the board of trustees of the Menil Museum, the Texas Defenders Service, which provides representation for indigent death row defendants on final appeal, the Mickey Leland Kibbutzim Internship Foundation, which sends high school students to Israel and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Leland Internship Program Advisory Board. She and other community leaders have formed Communities of Conscience with the American Jewish Committee of Houston, focusing on bridging the divide between divergent Houston groups. Previous board service included an appointment by the president to the Southern African Enterprise Development Fund, the governor of Texas to the Board of Regents of the Texas A&M University System and the mayor of Houston to the Houston Public Library Foundation.

Gene Locke
Gene practices in the public law area. He is the former City Attorney for the City of Houston and former Harris County Commissioner. He is experienced in various state and local government subjects, including constitutional issues, public-private ventures, elections, redistricting, affirmative action, tort actions, public contracting, sports venue projects and franchise agreements.

Gene has handled major litigation involving these and other public law issues while advising and assisting governmental clients. He has represented both government and corporate clients in various public law matters and other legal issues. Gene has served as general counsel to the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority and special counsel to the Metropolitan Transit Authority.

Judson Robinson III
Judson W. Robinson, III is the President and CEO of the Houston Area Urban League. He previously served as Deputy Commissioner for Harris County Precinct 2; and from 1991 to 1997, Judson served the City of Houston as the Vice Mayor Pro Tem and as City Council Member at Large Position 5. While serving on City Council, Judson chaired numerous committees including the Committee on Redevelopment and Revitalization, Committee on Fiscal Affairs, Committee on Minority and Women Owned Business and the Committee on Regulatory Affairs, among others.

In addition, Judson serves on various local, state and national political organizations, civic and community boards and various leadership organizations. A graduate of Fisk University in Nashville, Judson is married and has three children. He was appointed to the Uptown Houston TIRZ Board of Directors in 1999.
