Seeking persons who are knowledgeable, or those who know of academics, scholars, and historians who are knowledgeable about the paths traveled by former slaves as they moved from Galveston to Freemans Town and Independence Heights, which are located in present day Houston.

Please forward to any individual/families who have an interest and knowledge of the of the paths taken by the newly freed people of African descent in Houston and the surrounding areas after the Juneteenth announcement of Emancipation. See details below from Lillie Coney.

Many thanks and all the best in 2021!

My name is Lillie Coney, I am Policy Director for Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.

Thank you for your interest in historic preservation. I hope that you can participate in this opportunity to contribute to the development of a national trail that recognizes the lives of former slaves who resided on Galveston Island and traveled to Houston to begin new lives as free persons.

I am seeking persons who are knowledgeable, or those who know of academics, scholars, and historians who are knowledgeable about the paths traveled by former slaves as they moved from Galveston to Freemans Town and Independence Heights, which are located in present day Houston.

The study currently underway needs specific information on this aspect of black life following the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation on Galveston Island.

I can be reached by responding to this email.  My cell is 202-870-6429.
