#OnThisDayInJazzHistory: Sidney Bechet and Muggsy Spanier Record Together

March 28, 1940 brought together the legendary Sidney Bechet with cornetist Muggsy Spanier for an iconic recording date. Featuring their group the Big Four (with guitarist Carmen Mastren and bassist Wellman Braud), the date brought out some of the two artists' finest playing on sides like "Four or Five Times," "China Boy," and "Lazy River." These dates—occurring in the midst of a career revival for Bechet following renewed interest in the earlier New Orleans style of playing (Bechet even returned to clarinet on some of the tracks)—stand as essential listening even 80 years later.
