UTHEALTH STOMP OUT STROKE FESTIVAL - Mayor Turner & more! POSTPONED

Hi Donna,

I hope that you are well.

Is there a way that I could pass information about this event, 4th annual UTHealth STOMP OUT STROKE FESTIVAL, on to members of the e-family?

(Here are some of the statistics, according to the American Stroke Association:
African-Americans suffer more strokes than any other group of people.
For men between the ages of 45 and 54, the risk of ischemic stroke — the most prevalent type of stroke, which is caused by a blood clot that blocks an artery — is three times higher in African-Americans than in Caucasians.
For African-Americans between the ages of 20 and 44, the risk of stroke is nearly two-and-a-half times higher than it is for Caucasians.
According to the National Stroke Association, stroke or heart disease will claim the lives of half of all African-American women.
African-Americans have more severe strokes that are also more disabling.)

Thanks!!
Phylliss

Mayor Turner’s 9th Annual Family Day
Provides Food, Fun, Baseball and Entertainment

Mayor Sylvester Turner 9th Annual Family Day at Sylvester Turner Park will be bigger and better than ever.

The event will be held Saturday, April 9, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Sylvester Turner Park, 2800 West Little York Road.  Admission, games and food are free.

“Family Day is a way for everyone in our community to come together for fun and fellowship,” said Mayor Turner.  “We have something for everyone from ages 1 to 100.”

Let’s start with entertainment.  The popular J. Paul Jr. and the Zydeco Nubreeds will again perform.  Dancing is allowed—we dare you to sit still.  The Aldine Carver High School dance and theater students will put on their usual show with singing, dancing and some out-of-this-world performances.  The Luna Llena Mariachi Band from Rice University returns.  The Eisenhower High School Jazz Band and the M. C. Williams Middle School Orchestra will perform.  A lion dance and martial arts show round out the day.

Of course, baseball is a major part of Sylvester Turner Park with Major League Baseball’s Urban Youth Academy located there.  Local kids from the Academy’s RBI teams will participate in pitch, hit and run competitions and then you can catch these future all-stars at games at 1, 2 and 3 p.m.  And MLB lets everyone “Play Ball” with interactive baseball games.

This year, Mayor Turner has formed a team of “City Hall All Stars” to join him, his staff  and City Council members playing the Houston media in a celebrity softball game at 3 p.m.

For the youngsters, there will be inflatable games, a rock-wall and trains.  Seniors will enjoy their own tent with bingo.  And anyone can visit one of our face painters for a unique look to wear the rest of the day.

METRO will again provide free shuttle buses to the park beginning at 2 p.m. from four locations:  Carver High School, 2100 South Victory; Lone Star College Victory Center, 4141 Victory; Living Word Fellowship Church, 7350 T. C. Jester; and Shady Acres Church, 7330 Vogel.

Let’s keep everyone safe.  Please do not bring alcohol, drugs, backpacks or large bags, grills, animals or motorcycles.

Family Day is produced by Mayor Turner’s Greater North Houston Youth Alliance and the Mayor’s Office of Special Events.  Mayor Turner thanks our many sponsors:  AARP Texas, the Aldine Independent School District, Amerigroup, City of Houston Police, Fire and Parks Departments, Coca-Cola, Comcast, Constable Precinct 1 Alan Rosen, Dirt Works, Enterprise Rent-a–Car, HEB, the Harris County Sheriff’s Department, Houston Astros, Major League Baseball, METRO, Minute Maid, Pepsi, Reddy Ice and Texas 2-Way Radios.
