Harryette Mullen
1953–
Harryette Mullen was born in Florence, Alabama, and raised in Fort Worth, Texas. She has earned a B.A. in English from the University of Texas at Austin and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Early in her career as a poet, she worked in the Artists in Schools program sponsored by the Texas Commission on the Arts, and for six years she taught literature at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
Her most recent books include Urban Tumbleweed (Graywolf Press, 2013), Blues Baby: Early Poems (Bucknell University Press, 2002), and Sleeping with the Dictionary (University of California Press, 2002), a finalist for the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Los Angeles Times Book Award in poetry. Three of her earliest collections—all published in the 1990s—were collected into Recyclopedia (Graywolf Press, 2006), which received a PEN Beyond Margins Award. In 2013, Mullen published the chapbook Broken Glish: Five Prose Poems by Harryette Mullen with The Center For Book Arts.
Mullen's work is driven by wordplay and allusion, centered in a larger tradition of African American writing and representations of black women. The poet Michael Palmer has noted that reading Mullen's work "is a bit like hearing a new musical instrument for the first time, playing against a prevalent social construction of reality."
The 2009 recipient of the Academy of American Poets Fellowship, Mullen is also the recipient of grants from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation of New Mexico, and the Texas Institute of Letters. Mullen's other honors include a Gertrude Stein Award in Innovative American Poetry and the Jackson Poetry Prize, as well as a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship; a Rockefeller Fellowship from the Susan B. Anthony Institute for Women's Studies at the University of Rochester; and a United States Artist Fellowship. She teaches African American literature and creative writing in the English Department at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Guiding Prayer
Breathing in to prayer, I am in awe of the unbound spirit, the infinite presence within and around me. God is vitality in my breath, beauty in the natural world, strength in my determination, and compassion in my acts of service. I recognize God in the spaciousness of the universe as well as in my limitless dreams.
Let me set my sight beyond where I have seen before, into the vast reality of divine power and presence. Let me draw upon divine power and presence in order to fulfill my great potential.
In the harmony of prayer, my heart beats to the rhythm of God. The pulse of infinite life moves me, nourishes me, and empowers me to give life to my dreams.

Subject: More Teacher Training Yoga!!!
Hi Friends and Fam,
Thanks to so many of you who came to our Newby Teacher Class in May!
If you wanna come explore your yogi-self again, or you couldn’t come last time and you’ve ever wanted to try yoga but were afraid to jump in, now’s your chance. Or if you’re already a practicing yogi, I hope you’ll take advantage of this class and support a couple of newby teachers!
Flowing-Slow- With- Yoga
Sunday, July 28 @ 2:30pm
Yogaleena Studio
2621 S. Shepherd (upstairs facing Shepherd)
This Sunday at 2:30, I’ll be co-teaching a free one hour yoga class with one of the other teachers in my yoga teacher training class,Terri. She’s an amazing yogi; you will love her, and I’m … learning. But, because I’m “learning,” we are gonna slow it way down and try to make the class as accessible to as many as possible, so even if you’ve never ever tried yoga or given it up before, it would be great if you came back! We are looking forward to all ages and all shapes and sizes! Everyone is welcome.
It’s at Yogaleena Studio, in the old Randall’s shopping center at the corner of Shepherd and Westheimer. The class is free!!! ($5 donations are suggested, but not necessary, and will be donated to one of the local animal shelters I think (hasn’t been exactly decided).
We have everything you need at the studio, but if you have a mat, you can certainly bring it! Water bottle might come in handy, too!
Otherwise, just bring yourself in some comfy clothes.
Our philosophy of yoga is don’t do anything that hurts, doesn’t feel right, or you just don’t want to do it. There is never any shame in just sitting any move out and watching or resting.
I promise you’ll feel good afterwords.
Hope to see you Sunday at 2:30! (I suggest you arrive 10/15 minutes early to get settled on a mat :) or a chair if you prefer)
Please share the email with anyone you like!!! And reach out if you have questions.
You can sign up on the mind body app or just show up. I don’t think we will have a crowd :)

Caroline Kennedy (President Kennedy's daughter) is looking for the women seamstresses who sewed code into computers' memory rope (ROM) for Apollo missions
Find the Women Who Sewed Us Into Space
Ambassador Caroline Kennedy is looking for seamstresses who wove code for the computers used by NASA's Apollo program. She hopes to connect with the women, or their descendants, and to invite them to be part of the JFK Library's celebrations of the historic anniversary. Memory for the guidance computer was equal to only 72KB, and it took 8 weeks to weave that software into the core rope memory (ROM). The women were called LOL - stands for little old ladies. Software written by MIT programmers was woven into the Raytheon computer core rope memory by these female workers in factories. Some programmers nicknamed the finished product LOL memory, for Little Old Lady memory
If you know anything, please email Caroline at jfkmoonshot@jfklfoundation.org or kennedy@jfklfoundation.org

"Women who had worked in textile factories here in Massachusetts, which is such a big part of our heritage, sowed the memory rope for the Apollo missions -- the early computers, the guidance systems," Kennedy said.
So far, Kennedy believes she knows the names of five women who were part of the program:
Caroline Butler
Mary Julian
Helen Lennon
Vernell Norman
Edna Walcott

Efamily Member Robin Thorton seeks support of any amount (will be doubled by Google) to assist her students at KIPP in a Robotics
Efamily member Robin Thorton asks for help for her classroom below. She and Kervis you may remember as volunteers at south central sportz baseball. I just donated and it was very quick. Donations of any amount will be doubled by google as long as the funds last.
From Robin -- Hi Friends,
I want to make sure my students have what they need to succeed, so I've created a classroom project request through DonorsChoose.org, an award-winning charity.
Donations of any size will help my kids. Right now, any contribution you make to my project will be doubled by Google.org. This will turn a $10 donation into a $20 donation. Your donation will brighten my students' school year, and you'll get heartfelt thank-yous from my class and photos of your gift in action.
Here's my classroom request:
Code My Future With Digiland Tablets
To have your donation matched dollar for dollar, just make a contribution on that project page -- donations will be doubled automatically, but only while funding lasts.
If you know anyone who is passionate about education, please pass this along. My students and I greatly appreciate your support.
