The Harris County - Houston Sports Authority will be hosting over
15,000 athletes from ages 5-18 on July 27 - August 6 for the 50th Anniversary
of the AAU Junior Olympic Games. There will be approximately 50,000
people who will descend upon our region very soon and the economic impact
will be huge, with approximately $52M spent in our communities. We
really need your help in several ways:
A FOOD DRIVE to benefit the Houston Food Bank will be held for
the first time in the Games history on Tuesday, August 2nd
between 8AM - 2PM with drop off points at the George R. Brown Convention
Center Hall A in downtown Houston and Turner Stadium at Humble High
School. Would you be willing to drop off some canned vegetables, school
snacks, peanut butter, and/or granola bars? We really want this to be a
success and something the AAU does in all future cities.
We are still in desperate need
of VOLUNTEERS. The four-hour shifts needed will be in
our box office and merchandise areas, which are all air conditioned spaces.
Recent science studies show that donating a few hours to help your
community or giving money to a good cause can actually improve your mood and
act as a "happiness booster." Will you consider helping to
make Houston shine while also giving yourself a cheerful lift? Please
contact Alan Resendez at aresendez@houstonsports.org
to volunteer.
Do you know a child under the
age of 18 that would love to have an opportunity to PARTICIPATE IN
A WHEELCHAIR OR AMBULATORY RACE (physical
disabilities such as dwarfism, amputation/limb loss, blindness/visual
impairment, spinal cord injury and cerebral palsy/brain injury/stroke)? For the first time in the history of
the Games, the AAU
have obliged our request to be inclusive and have added these categories
to the race schedule on August 6 at approximately 1:45pm. There is no
pre-qualifier and there will be a great audience in the stands to cheer
loudly for these young people. We want to encourage kids to participate
in either the 100M or 400M race within their age group. We realize that
some may not have the equipment needed, but we will provide it for them.
This is really meant to be an opportunity to foster ongoing sport participation
and a healthy way of living for individuals with physical impairments. Will you please help us reach the children who may need
your encouragement to sign up?
We want this to be a success and something the AAU considers
doing every year in each city that hosts the Games. Anyone interested
please contact Cindy Berkman at cberkman@houstonsports.org for more
information.
Thank you for
considering to help us in any of the above-mentioned areas.
