U of St. Thomas Summer Programs - Reading and Speed Reading for ages 4 up and Adults/College

Both my children did this program at age 4 (and I voluntarily sat in the class while they were taught) - these were excellent classes with good workbooks/tapes as well. Parents can just drop off the kids if needed, but I enjoyed learning with them! Pole and Vole and all their stories.

June Robotics Summer Camp recommended by efamily member Robin Thornton

www.synergisticstemoutreachcenter.org Robin's son will be teaching at this camp!

HI Donna,

As parents we are always searching for great experiences for our kiddos. Here is one I can recommend because my son Reed will be one of the instructors.

STEM Camp for June 2017 sponsored by New Beginnings Church and hosted by Synergistic STEM Outreach Center (SCFSTEM) at the New Beginnings Church Maker Lab near Cullen and Beltway 8 area. Kiddos from 1st grade - 9th grade can make and take STEM projects at each day's session. Sessions are limited to 8 kiddos for each activity for a personalized experience.

Dee Wallace, SCFSTEM Director, has over 10 years experience as a Robotics Coach/Mentor with FIRST Robotics (FRC, FTC, FLL), VEX, Botball, BEST, and AquaRobotics, Texas Lego Trainer, and chemistry teacher. She provides opportunities for kiddos to awaken their Inner STEM.

Reed is now teaching robotics coding and construction skills which he learned as a member of the SCFSTEM FIRST Robotics team "Gearnotics" where he was selected as a National Dean's List Finalist 2015. As a Team Mentor with Ms. Wallace Gearnotics earned a UL Industrial Safety Award at March 2017 Lone Star Robotics Regional. This week April 19 - 22 the FIRST Robotics World Championship will be making its Texas Debut at the George R. Brown Convention Center 9 am - 5 pm with closing ceremonies Saturday April 22 at Minute Maid Park. This will be Robotics competitions at its   very best (FIRST Lego, FIRST Tech Challenge, and FIRST Robotics competition). Several Houston area school districts will have teams competing: Clear Creek ISD (sponsored by NASA), Awty International School, Strake Jesuit/St. Agnes, HISD (Lamar/Carnegie), Conroe ISD, Katy ISD, and Goose Creek ISD. Mayor's NEW Complete Communities Initiative

http://houstontx.gov/completecommunities/

From City Councilmember Amanda Edwards Special Announcement -
April 17, 2017

Today, Mayor Sylvester Turner announced the launch of the much-anticipated Complete Communities Initiative. Complete Communities is a pilot program designed to revitalize Houston's under-resourced communities in partnership with existing neighborhood residents. The initiative will work toward creating sustainable, "complete" neighborhoods that are safe, affordable, economically viable, and that have access to quality education, affordable housing, transportation options, green spaces, healthy food options, economic opportunity, and well-maintained infrastructure.

In order to achieve sustainable, comprehensive community results that also safeguard against widespread gentrification, the City must embrace a nuanced approach, and work alongside community partners and neighborhoods to specifically identify what will make their respective neighborhoods "complete," and implement that vision.

The Complete Communities Initiative will commence with the following five (5) pilot communities:

1.      Acres Homes
2.      Gulfton
3.      Second Ward
4.      Near Northside
5.      Third Ward

In the case of Acres Homes, Gulfton, and Second Ward, the City will lead the local community planning efforts in those communities. For the Near Northside and Third Ward, the City will support the existing planning efforts of local community-based organizations. It is important to note that although Complete Communities will begin with five neighborhoods, the City's commitment does not end there. This first phase of the initiative sets Houston on a path to address the ever-increasing gap between the "haves" and the "have nots" in Houston. At a future date, the Mayor will add other under-resourced communities to the Complete Communities Initiative.

The City will lead a community engagement process for Acres Homes, Gulfton and Second Ward to create local community plans that encapsulate how to make those respective neighborhoods "complete" communities. The local community plans will be tailored to each respective community. Partners with extensive experience in community-building will assist and enable residents to identify short-term and long-term projects to be implemented in their neighborhoods. The City will also collaborate with the Complete Community Advisory Committee, comprised of community-building stakeholders across Houston, during this process. In order to both develop and implement these local community plans, the City will explore public-private partnerships and private investment in these projects, where appropriate, to help build local capacity and to promote sustainability. The goal of creating and implementing these local community plans is to enable Houstonians in various places across Houston to have the opportunity to thrive where they are.

"With the Complete Communities Initiative, we are not simply imposing programs on under-resourced neighborhoods; rather, we are seeking to collaborate with these communities to create and implement a shared community vision that empowers that community for the long-term." Council Member Edwards stated. Edwards adds, "I commend Mayor Turner for including the Complete Communities Initiative among his top priorities, and look forward to working with Mayor Turner and my colleagues on City Council to help move all of Houston forward."

MIT Enterprise Forum on Innovations in Education - No Cost Seminar

INNOVATIONS IN EDUCATION

April 26, 2017
9:30 AM - 11:30 AM
James A. Baker III Hall, Baker Institute, Rice University
6100 Main Street
Houston, TX 77005
http://www.bakerinstitute.org/
A country’s economic growth in the 21st century is very much a function of its ability to both generate ideas and translate them into innovative products and services. Knowledge of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) plays a key role in fostering the innovation and entrepreneurship that are so crucial for a nation’s long-term economic development.
Rice University's Baker Institute, together with the MIT Enterprise Forum of Texas and Texas A&M University, will co-host an international panel on innovation in education. The panelists are all educators who have been involved in programs and initiatives to strengthen STEM education within their respective institutions, communities and countries.
Join the conversation online with #BakerSTEM.
The program will be streamed live.  There will be instructions coming out shortly on how you can watch the live stream of the program if you are not able to attend.

Hidden Figures - One More to speak April 28th Wash DC

Dr. Christine Voncile Mann Darden, the fourth mathematics genius Hidden Figure in the Margot Lee Shetterly book Hidden Figures, will be 18th Annual Scholarship Dinner keynote speaker:

Friday, April 28, 2017, 7:00pm,
Church of the Redeemer, Presbyterian
1423 Girard St., Northeast,
Washington, DC, 20017
$50/Adult; $25/Student.
For event details, please contact Kevin P. Moore, 202-258-4857, or Carl Payne, 301-949-8755.

Dr. Darden was not in the movie "Hidden Figures" because she came along about 20 years later, though of course she would see Hidden Figure Katherine Johnson (played by Taraji P. Henson in the movie) at AKA Sorority meetings, or see Johnson's daughters in school.

While attending Hampton University, Dr. Darden protested at lunch counters, being refused food, so she would just sit quietly and do her homework along with the other Black students. When the owner decided to close the restaurant, they marched in the streets, and most importantly, they registered voters, walking through black neighborhoods to get them prepared to vote in the November 1960 presidential election.
See Dr. Darden's bio at http://www.thehistorymakers.com/biography/christine-darden
