Featuring some of the Bookshlf community’s incredible women in STEM
STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) consistently provides more jobs and better career opportunities than other fields, with STEM graduates earning significantly more on average than their peers. However, women in STEM continue to face an uphill battle in getting their fair share of these opportunities.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, women in STEM earn 19% less on average than their male counterparts, and the gap is even wider for women of color. Women also make up only 28% of the STEM workforce, despite accounting for half of all college graduates. Undeterred by these industry trends, women in STEM continue to rise to the top of their respective fields and have helped shatter the stereotype of STEM being a “man’s game”.
Our aim is for Bookshlf to shine a light on many of these amazing professionals and give their accomplishments more visibility. That’s why we spent time building a community that includes many of these amazing female professionals, who have curated dozens of fascinating and insightful Shelves to feed the Bookshlf’s community’s thirst for knowledge. Bookshlf allows STEM and Science communicators to share more than just a post lost in cluttered news feeds, instead allowing them to curate around specific topics within their expertise
Here are just some of the incredible women in STEM curating on Bookshlf right now:
Camille Calibeo is an aerospace expert and business strategist at Lockheed Martin Space, as well as a major advocate of STEAM (STEM + Art), inspired by her days as a nationally ranked trumpet player in high school. Calibeo previously was an aerospace systems engineer on NASA’s Artemis program, working to send humans back to the Moon.
Calibeo has been curating over ten Shelves to follow on Bookshlf on topics ranging from aerospace companies, deep space exploration, “Pie in the Sky'' aerospace technologies (science fiction technology that’s becoming a reality), and, of course, women in STEAM. she was also the subject of a January Curator Spotlight
The subject of another recent Curator Spotlight, Dr. Tarika Barrett is the incoming CEO and current Chief Operating Officer at Girls Who Code, a nonprofit organization that supports and advocates for women in computer science. Dr. Barrett has dedicated her career to fighting for equity and lifting up marginalized students as a classroom teacher, a leader at the Department of Education in New York City, and in organizations like iMentor and Girls Who Code.
Dr. Barrett told us about her work with Girls Who Code, “I can tell you that it’s not just about sparking interest in STEM and coding - even though we are bullish about solving this pipeline problem, we know we have to extend it, we have to get more girls in, we know that it’s not just that pipeline problem, and we know it’s deeper than just STEM Education,” She added, “Too many of the girls that we’ve taught to love coding leave the industry too early, or because of the systemic barriers that I’ve already mentioned.”
On Bookshlf, Dr. Barrett curates Shelves spotlighting Black leaders in the community and features STEM resources for parents to help get their kids interested in computer science. She also curates a Shelf on her own personal TV/movie recommendations.
Kellie Gerardi is an aerospace & defense professional who has flown on multiple parabolic flights to evaluate commercial spacesuits and conduct bioastronautics research in microgravity. She describes herself as a “citizen scientist” and her 2020 book, "Not Necessarily Rocket Science: A Beginner's Guide to Life in the Space Age" talks about how to break into the space industry and her own unconventional path into the field.
“Humanity’s next giant leap will require the contributions of artists, engineers, and everyone in between,” Gerardi told Bookshlf. “In the book, I take readers on a tour of this unique window in history and offer an inside look into the commercial spaceflight industry and all those working to democratize access to space.”
Kellie curates Shelves on the Commercial Spaceflight Industry, Human Spaceflight, Exploration, Future Technologies, and more in the space and science world.
Jessica Petereit is a PhD student in sustainable aquaculture at Alfred-Wegener Institute in Germany who knew she wanted to be a marine biologist when she was twelve. Her research is in alternative feed ingredients for farmed fish, as well as improving the general quality of life of farmed animals.
On Bookshlf, Petereit curates a Shelf called “Aquaculture Feeds” that drills down on the subject of her PhD research, sharing news and updates. Her profile features other Shelves dedicated to other sustainability topics, including one on her personal obsession, Shark Conservation.
Joan Melendez Misner is a NASA Engineer and a part time Science Communicator, whose blog encourages women to get into STEM to help break down barriers for other women in the field. She is a dual-graduate of the University of Maryland and Towson University with a Master’s of Science in Systems Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School.
On Bookshlf, Misner curates multiple fascinating shelves dealing with the space industry and space exploration, including “Space Politics,” which shares political news stories that could have an impact on space exploration, and “Aspiring Astronauts,” which curates resources for those hoping to one day journey into space themselves. Misner also curates around the topic of Women in STEM, including her favorite STEM podcasts and spotlights unsung women in the history of space exploration.
Kate Gunderson is an aerospace engineer at the NASA Johnson Space Center where she helps maintain and upgrade the Center’s fleet of aircraft for astronaut training and missions. Gunderson co-oped at GE Aviation, with the United States House of Representatives, and at NASA’s JSC while getting a Master’s in aerospace engineering at Georgia Tech. After graduation she jumped full-time into her dream job with the JSC’s Aircraft Operations Engineering Branch.
Gunderson is passionate about encouraging women to get involved in STEM, something she posts about regularly on her blog and in her “Shattering the Glass Ceiling'' Shelf on Bookshlf. Her other curated Shelves include topics like aviation, space exploration and rocket science.
Chloe Gharios is a civil engineer in Los Angeles who sees engineering as one of the most powerful tools at our disposal to help communities grow and thrive. On Bookshlf, Gharios curates extensively around the topic of Women in Stem, citing her experience as the only woman in many engineering classes while in school. She even has a Shelf dedicated to podcast recommendations for women breaking into the field.
Gharios’ other Shelves span topics like STEM education, cardiology and the future of renewable energy.
Hayley Caddes is a chemical engineer and data scientist who currently serves as the New York director of The Knowledge Society, a national organization that develops programs to mentor and coach students to give them skills they need to leave their mark on the world.
As one might expect, given her background as a chemical engineer who later pivoted to data science, Caddes curates on a wide spectrum of science topics on Bookshlf. Follow Caddes to check out her Shelves on topics as broad as medicine and biology and as specialized as gene editing and blockchain.
Lauren Killam never wanted to be an engineer or an astronaut, but had a lifelong fascination with the wonders of outer space. Reading the United Nations’ “Outer Space Treaty,” the 1967 agreement that created the basis of international space law, helped Killam focus her passion. Now, Killam is working to become a lawyer who specializes in international space law, documenting her journey along the way. On Bookshlf, Killam’s “Space Law & Policy” Shelf is effectively a journal of the fascinating resources and information she’s found along the way to becoming an expert in the laws that govern the cosmos.
Lauren Kafadarian is a quality assurance engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, where she has been working and interning since she was in USC’s aeronautical engineering program.
