Job Title: Associate Director of Digital Concert Production
Department: Operations
Reports to: Director of Operations
Status: Full-time, Exempt

Summary:
The Associate Director of Digital Production is responsible for managing digital content created by the artistic and operations departments, including any audio and/or video productions on various digital platforms. This position ensures that Houston Symphony concert videos, multi-media concert projects, concert livestreams and other audio-visual concert content is consistently at the highest
level possible, keeping us at the forefront of the industry.

Essential Job Functions:

Manage all aspects of Houston Symphony concert livestreams, including managing the live chat and other elements needed with the livestream platform (i.e. YouTube, Vimeo, encoding hardware and/or software such as Teradek, OBS, Livestream Studio, etc.), along with monitoring rehearsals for livestreams.
Organize and manage the storage, organization, and distribution of any audio-visual concert content created and/or produced by the Houston Symphony artistic and operations departments.
Coordinate multi-media concert elements and video screen content including concert slides, videos, translations, and other film projects we present, including creating, developing, directing, editing, and/or producing such material as needed.
Work with Musical Ambassador, Music Director, artistic and/or other departments on the development and execution of concert video and other multi-media concert projects as assigned.
Manage score readers and/or directors including recruiting, training, hiring, and scheduling.
Supervise the livestream and/or other digital content production team, including any tasks for IATSE labor, and work with operations team to staff and schedule those departments, as needed.
Coordinate with audio production team, including Recording Engineer and Live Audio Engineer, as required for any livestream and/or other video and/or audio projects.
Understand and work with IATSE, AFM, and any union media agreements (IMA, etc.) and assist the Chief Operating Officer with ensuring that distribution of all concert media is in compliance with prevailing union agreements.
Work with the artistic department to ensure and coordinate rights to digitally distribute concert media content with music publishers and guest artists.
Work with Director of Operations on audio and video equipment management, including managing maintenance and procurement schedules and budgets.
Assist with any video content distribution both inside and outside the organization, to include issuance of agreements for personal and/or third-party usage material and pulling audio and/or audio- visual clips for use by other Houston Symphony departments, as needed.
Participate in the approvals process for audio and visual content produced from concert media.

Build and maintain relationships with experts in the field, ensuring Houston Symphony access and support for equipment and systems. Liaise with such contacts and connect with members of the audio and/or video teams as needed for troubleshooting and/or developing new concepts and systems related to digital concert content.
Actively monitor industry livestream and technology trends with a curiosity and willingness to learn about and/or suggest new ways to improve systems, where appropriate.
Maintain a friendly and positive environment throughout the creative process of developing and executing new and existing content.
Be integral to the team tasked with developing media solutions to design and build into a renovation of Jones Hall.
Participate in production and other departmental meetings as needed.
Serve as primary livestream and/or digital content concert duty manager, in rotation with others in the operations department.
Serve in the back-of-house concert duty rotation when not otherwise required for concert duty due to livestream or other audio-visual concert content, as needed.
Perform additional duties as required by the Houston Symphony Society.

  • Bachelor’s degree or comparable education and experience and/or training.
  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience.
  • Experience with concert media content required.
  • Knowledge of classical music required.
  • Conversant with computers, internet, livestreaming, and related technology.
  • Has a clear sense of artistic judgement and professionalism.
  • Full proficiency in conductor’s score reading.
  • Creativity and flexibility are a must.
  • Skilled at project management and task prioritization and completion in a fast-paced environment handling multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to confidently and diplomatically interact with conductors and production teams to maintain quality of production and represent the Houston Symphony and its projects in the best possible manner.
  • Team-oriented with the ability to also work independently.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, including some holidays.
