Mayor Sylvester Turner joined the Black Heritage Society today to announce details about the 45th annual Original MLK Day Parade. For the 4th-year, the City of Houston is partnering with the Black Heritage Society to plan and produce a stellar parade filled with dynamic marching bands, decorated floats, and featuring several well-known celebrities and community leaders. The parade will begin at 10 a.m., Monday, January 16 near Houston City Hall. This year, the parade will feature 156 parade entries with 12 marching bands, including Texas Southern University leading off the event, the University of Houston band, the Rice University band, plus nine high school marching bands. The parade will also feature 14 floats and a lineup of retired athletes, educators, and a few surprise special guests. Former Houston Rocket Elvin Hayes, tennis great Zina Garrison, and Olympian Carl Lewis are some of the notable personalities who have confirmed their participation. "I encourage everyone to commemorate Dr. King with us. If you are not going to be on a float, marching with a band, or walking in the parade, I want to see you lined up along the route," said Mayor Turner. "Dr. King's civil rights movement had a direct impact in Houston. He visited Houston's Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church and developed a friendship with then-Rev. William Lawson. We must honor his vision and keep his dream alive." The parade will begin at 10 a.m., Monday, January 16 near Houston City Hall.
