Black Girls CODE Houston Chapter Presents: Build a Webpage in a Day!, March 11
thanks efamily member Ashley Small for sharing!
Supported by
AT&T as part of AT&T Aspire, the company’s
signature philanthropic initiative to help students succeed in school and
beyond, Black Girls CODE will offer young girls valuable skills in ideation,
computation science, teamwork and public speaking. The programs are
inexpensive, and scholarships are available to those in need.
The first
workshop in Houston is Build a Webpage in a Day at Aldine Resource and Staff
Development Center (9999 Veterans
Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77038) on Saturday, March 11 for girls ages 7 to 17.
This workshop will teach participants to build their own unique webpage in one
day using fun games and activities to introduce HTML, CSS, and basic web
structure.
Black Girls CODE
workshops will provide girls an opportunity to be exposed to a career field in
which there will be 1.1 million jobs created by the year 2024. The goal of the
workshop is to increase interest of girls of color in STEM career fields. Women
of color are traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields especially in
technology where only 3% of African American women and less than 1% of Latinas
receive degrees in computer science.
Together with
AT&T, Black Girls CODE hopes to expose girls of color in Texas to programs
that lead to careers in technology and engineering. Black Girls CODE will fill a critical gap in
the Houston tech ecosystem with program offerings with a singular and pointed
focus on exposing underrepresented girls to key skills in leadership,
technology, and social impact. Through
Aspire, AT&T also supports Black Girls CODE chapters in the Dallas Metro
area with similar programs and impact.
