Tuesday, April 21, 2020 8:00 PM
Special Concerts
A co-presentation with Washington Performing Arts and Abe Fortas Foundation. Championing change and diversity in the classical music world, the British Chineke! Orchestra provides young black and minority ethnic (BME) artists performance opportunities around the world ("Chineke!" comes from the word "Chi'" in the Nigerian Igbo language, which refers to "the god of creation of all good things", or "the spirit of creation."). The concert features Sheku Kanneh-Mason, @ShekuKM the star cellist at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s (Rachel Meghan, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex, Princess of the United Kingdom) 19 May 2018 Royal Wedding in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle in the United Kingdom. Kanneh-Mason performed three pieces during the ceremony, as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex signed the register (out of view of guests and cameras) just after their exchanging of vows.

Sheku Kanneh-Mason (born 4 April 1999) https://shekukannehmason.com/ is a British cellist who won the 2016 BBC Young Musician of the Year award. He was the first black musician to win the award since its launch 38 years earlier. Sheku is dubbed “Cello Bae,” thanks in part to his good looks, in part to his obvious talent, and in part to his "cello face"—the slightly more reserved cousin to “bass face.” Additionally, Sheku
1) Is son of Mr. Stuart Mason, a luxury hotel business manager from Antigua, and Dr. Kadiatu Kanneh, a former lecturer at the University of Birmingham, from Sierra Leone.
2) Is the third of seven classically-trained-musically-gifted children and began learning the cello at the age of six
3) Has ability to play everything from memory.
4) At the age of nine, passed the Grade 8 cello examination with the highest marks in the UK
5) Won the Marguerite Swan Memorial Prize.
6) Uses his earnings to pay for cello lessons for other students. Sheku said "Chineke! is a really inspiring project. I rarely go to a concert and see that kind of diversity in the orchestra. Or in the audience. Having the orchestra will definitely change the culture. It's so important we're celebrating music by black composers."
