With your support, during the pandemic the Houston Museum of African American Culture has served more than 45,000 people in 2021 at our Caroline building through our in-house exhibitions, and across the city through our public art, our drive-in movies and our public programming in low-income areas. Acknowledging the challenges, our public programs continued with a mix of in-person and virtual formats. Our wide ranging exhibitions at the museum, which remain free to visitors, included celebrated Masters Faith Ringgold, Romare Bearden, Richard Mayhew, Aminah Robinson and William Tolliver; renowned artists Danny Simmons ,TAFA, Sanah Brown-Bowers and younger established artists from around the country in our Fresh and Contemporary exhibit, including Gavin Benjamin, Kevin Johnson, Khalif Thompson, and Trinity Thomas as well as new talents Jessica Carroll, Amara Merritt, and Justin Sterling in his solo exhibit Windows of Opportunity. Our Chief Curator landed the museum its first Art in America cover, and our very first Art and Culture Trip was an extremely successful visit to the Virginia Museum of Fine Art in Richmond where we were able to see the celebrated The Dirty South exhibition in its original setting.
Your generosity enabled HMAAC to continue our mission, and we are truly grateful.
While things looked a bit different this year, our need for connection, inspiration, and opportunities to create has not changed. In fact, these moments to reflect and recharge are more essential than ever. The movement of our Bert Long, Jr. eye sculptures to the outside front of the museum has flourished for visitors as an extension of our galleries, an outdoor classroom, and a community gathering spot. And the expansion of the Culture Shoppe is the result of our continuing extensive engagement of our visitors, allowing them to take culture home with them as they support the museum with their purchases and see the museum as their cultural haven.
None of this would be possible without the enduring support of our members and donors. Thank you for empowering all that we do.
