How to Apply
Due to the high volume of applications received, the FBI internship application acceptance window is open for a number of weeks only.
The application window generally opens in September/October.
Once the application window is open and you are able to apply, please indicate on your application whether you are interested in the paid Honors Internship Program, or the non-paid Volunteer Internship Program. Interested participants will generally apply to the Field Office closest to their permanent address or school where they will be residing for the summer. With your application, you must submit your resume and a transcript* to be considered.
* Transcripts or unofficial transcripts should be submitted from the student's last completed semester of school, which indicates the cumulative GPA prior to the application date (e.g., completed Spring or Summer semester/or quarter cumulative GPA will be submitted with an internship application).
Please check this page regularly for updates and information about 2015 FBI Internship Program opportunities.
Selection Process
FBI Internship Programs are highly competitive. FBI representatives from each Field Office will arrange interviews with the most competitive candidates. A Headquarters selection committee will make the final determination based upon academic achievements, area of study, life/work experiences, and the current needs of the FBI. The FBI is an equal opportunity employer and supports workforce diversity and inclusion. The FBI actively seeks women, minorities and persons with disabilities for participation in all FBI Internship Programs.
It is suggested that you keep a copy of all application documents for your records. If you are selected for a second interview you will be required to bring a copy of the forms listed here with you.
Forms for Honors Internship Program
Forms for Volunteer Internship Program
Final decisions are generally made by January. Selected students will be contacted by a Human Resources representative and will receive a conditional job offer by phone for an internship. The initial offer is conditional because candidates selected must undergo an extensive FBI Background Investigation and receive an FBI Top Secret security clearance to participate in the program. The FBI field office nearest to the student's school will contact the student within 45 days of the selection to arrange a preliminary processing appointment. Final official notification of acceptance into the program is contingent upon the successful completion of the background investigation.
Intern assignments are based on the current skills needed, and available internship assignments throughout the Bureau.
