The Houston Chapter of the Tuskegee Alumni Association (HTAA) is having its 2nd Annual Scholarship Gala on January 23, 2016.  HTAA is taking over the Ensemble Theatre to celebrate Tuskegee’s rich history and to view the play “Fences".  The cocktail reception and raffle begins at 6:00 pm followed by the play at 8:00 pm.  Prior to the start of the play, we will honor three of our distinguished Tuskegee Alumni. The Honorees are Dr. John Stanford, Jr., Merele Gail Yarborough, and U. S. Congressman Alexander Green.  The attire for this event is semi-formal.

The 2016 2nd Annual Scholarship Gala benefits HTAA programs which includes:
  • Incoming Student Reception: welcome reception for incoming Houston area freshmen student and parents to provide orientation and care packages.
  • Providing scholarships for deserving students from the greater Houston area to attend Tuskegee University.
  • Increasing exposure of high school students interested in attending college at Tuskegee and other HBCU schools.
What is the play "Fences"?
"Fences" Is a powerful and dramatically compelling work that won August Wilson the 1987 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award, Troy Maxson is a strong man, yet hardened by life in an America where to be proud and black was to face pressures that could crush a man, body and soul. But the 1950s are yielding to the new spirit of liberation in the 1960s. It’s a spirit that is changing the world Troy Maxson has learned to deal with the only way he can…a spirit that is making him stronger, angry, and afraid in a world he never knew and to a wife and son he understand less and less.."
