OVERVIEW -- The Greater Channel Chapter of Jack & Jill Teens, Houston City Controller, and Wells Fargo Bank presents--Teens "Takeover Finances" Forum that includes an open forum with the newly elected City of Houston Controller Chris Brown. The financial forum will be presented in two parts:
Session I: Personal Finances for College Bound Teens. Through an interactive and engaging presentation, teens will learn personal budgeting techniques, saving, choosing the right bank, financing student loans, and preserving your credit. Banking services/products geared toward college bound teens, and bank card usage-- credit vs debit. Teens will have a quick course in evaluating and purchase stock. Teens are encouraged to bring a mobile device.
Session II: Open Forum with City Controller Chris Brown. Controller Brown will give an overview of the responsibilities of the City Controller's office; his top financial priorities in the first 100 days in office, and highlight teen programs that he intends to keep/create while in office. The teens will also be able to ask him questions in a Town Hall format led by teens.
Each session will be approximately 75 minutes. We expect approximately 125 high school age teens.
Objectives of the Forum—Greater Channel Chapter Teens have set out to achieve the following five objectives:
- Learn how to organize and present a financial teen forum
- Serve as host to more than 125 teens at a forum that will enable them to become informed advocates of financial matters that impact minority teens and their family;
- Make money management education and resources more easily available to minority teens and their families.
- Through the development and execution of the Finances Forum, area teens will learn and engage the following Jack & Jill of America Incorporated’s Jacqueline Moore Bowles Leadership Modules: Financial Literacy, Legislative, Public Speaking, Integrity and Respect, Problem Solving & Conflict Resolution, Responsibility, Goal Setting and Confidence.
- Greater Channel Teens can earn up to 10 volunteer hours.
