Astronaut Ron McNair, lost in the tragedy of Challenger, was a dear friend who was also a deacon at my home church and an inspiring role model for all. With a PhD in physics from MIT, after completing undergrad at North Carolina A&T, Ron was recruited for the Astronaut program - he was a jazz sax player (which he played in space) and a black belt in Karate (I saw him break concrete blocks at an NTA banquet where he was the speaker). Dad to Joy and Reggie-husband to Cheryl--very involved inside and outside of work...tonight his widow Cheryl, founder and CEO of the Dr. Ronald E. McNair Educational Science Literacy Foundation (DREME) will be featured on many interviews today including you may catch her on CBS Evening News, Saturday there will be an event in Lake City, SC where Joy will be the featured speaker. Keep the family in your thoughts and prayers today - it is the sacrifice of explorers like Ron that help humankind reach its destiny.
