Business Ecosystem Alliance for Minorities and Women - thanks Council Member Amanda Edwards for sharing

October 2021 Update

Friends,

This Fall 2021 season has been a time of transition and change for me. I appreciate all of your well wishes and support through it all. Your kindness and support have meant so much more than you may know. I am so grateful to all of you! Please check out some of the work we have done and continue to do!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF THE EMPOWERED YOU: TEXAS SENIOR CITIZENS CONFERENCE!

On October 14th, Be The Solution: Community Empowerment Organization hosted (via tele-townhall and zoom) The Empowered You: Texas Senior Citizens Conference. This free virtual event was sponsored by AARP, and served as a one-stop shop where seniors could access information and engagement that equipped them with the tools to thrive in this season of their lives. We would like to thank our fantastic speakers: Dr. Ugo Ihekweazu and Shayla Bryant, and inspirational speakers including: Rawle Andrews (President-Elect, Bar Association of D.C.), DeEtte Sauer (Champion Swimmer). We also thank Bourbon Street for the live music, the Houston Parks & Rec. Dept for the line dancing classes, The Alzheimer’s Association, and Lucille’s 1913 for the delicious meals. We would like to express our gratitude to all of our volunteers (included the UPS volunteer team), supporters, participants, and vendors that partnered with us to make this year’s event such a great success! After the conference, our seniors felt empowered and ready to “be the solution” no matter what challenges they face!

In light of my mother’s recent passing and her love for the conference, we dedicated this year’s conference to my mother, Isabella Dorian Edwards.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS TO REBUILD MR. BROWN’S HOME
Four years after sustaining damage caused by Harvey, the devastation remaining in 85 year old Mr. Brown is heartbreaking. I came to know of Mr. Brown because of his plumbing needs stemming from the Texas Winter Storm (Uri) & power outages. His neighbors reached out to me about Mr. Brown because of the work Be The Solution: Community Empowerment Organization was doing for seniors. In partnership with another non-profit partner (West Street Recovery), we sent plumbers out to help him, but the plumbers alerted me to outrageous circumstances Mr. Brown faced in his home.

We have since removed Mr. Brown from the home, but are excited to announce that Be The Solution: Community Empowerment Organization is teaming up with SBP USA to assist with repairing/rebuilding Mr. Brown’s home so that he may return to a safe, decent home! We need volunteers to sign up to assist with the repairs. Please sign up using this link to volunteer! Starting Monday, November 1st, we need volunteers for a few weeks to assist with rebuilding Mr. Brown’s home on Mondays through Saturdays. We are grateful to Melissa Correa & KHOU for highlighting Mr. Brown’s journey. To learn more about Mr. Brown’s story, click the image below. Please sign up to help today using this link.
4 Years after Harvey Interview
Mr. Brown has been waiting for four years to repair his home from Hurricane Harvey's damage. Watch Mr. Brown's story. Volunteer to help!
On August 26th, we launched the Business Ecosystem Alliance for Minorities and Women (BEAMW) to help reduce barriers faced by women and minority owned businesses seeking to access capital and to scale their businesses. With our launch event, we discussed our report, featured our partnership with Texas Capital Bank, and discussed ways to get involved in BEAMW.

In an effort to reduce barriers many women and minority businesses face in accessing networks that may assist with facilitating more access to capital, BEAMW will be launching a series of networking forums with banking institutions, small business owners, collaborators, chambers of commerce and business support organizations. Please join us on Tuesday, November 9th for the BEAMW Launch Networking Event co-hosted by: Texas Capital Bank, Impact HUB Houston, The Greater Houston Black Chamber, East End Chamber of Commerce, TruFund, Houston Minority Supplier Development Council, Houston Community College, Black Business Lab, The National Association of Minority Contractors – Greater Houston Chapter, and Supporting Our Success – S.O.S. To register for the event, please click here. With this event, we intend to help small business owners make key connections in an ecosystem focused on breaking down silos and removing obstacles that impact women and minority owned businesses.

Sincerely,

Amanda K Edwards
