Greetings from the NAACP Houston Youth Council Unit #6820, Following the NAACP Houston, Texas Youth Council Unit 6820's November General Membership meeting on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at 2:00 P.M., the Environmental & Climate Justice Committee and the Juvenile Justice Committee cordially invite your child, grandchild, godchild, niece, and nephew between the ages of 0-25 to participate in the Trees for Health; Letters for Change! advocacy program. This program aims to address and educate students on resolving historical operations at the Union Pacific Railroad, which resulted in soil and groundwater contamination disproportionately affecting underserved African American communities in Houston, TX. To ensure safety, students will engage in hands-on solutions on non-contaminated soil, to implement bioremediation through a planting activity. Students will also undertake an academic exploration by delving into news articles, letters, and court cases concerning environmental civil rights advocacy initiatives, in order to transform their research into a comprehensive congressional letter.
