....Besides knowing he'd be a smart, caring, wonderful mayor with sincere concern for this city that runs very deep...our efamily member Sylvester Turner is my personal friend and grad school buddy from waaay back (Sylvester was at Harvard Law School when I was at the K School).... we worked in the Progressive Action League where he was President...why I know he's a mover and shaker that cares...I saw with my own eyes during a youth Summit on the Hill in Austin last year (coordinated by efamily member HISD School Board Member Paula Harris -- shout out another hard working elected official) while my son was shadowing another State Rep, that Evan was assigned to, I sat in Sylvester's office with a birds eye view chatting with his scheduler Pam for a couple of hours and the trail of back to back visitors came in - each enthusiastically going on and on lauding how much Sylvester had personally helped them -- it stirred me -- they were all races, all ages from AARP to Health and Environmental causes...all with the same grin waiting to see Sylvester ... and I remember long ago, before Sylvester's years of service as a State Rep., the look and feel of his district -- Acres Homes before Sylvester's magic touch - and now there are treelined, 8 lane boulevards where there were 2 lane unlighted dust roads with ditches and no curbs, there is now a baseball field of dreams, and community centers and schools - you can SEE his work for the Acres Homes community...all of which he didn't do alone, as he is a master builder of coalitions from the Astros to others in public office, he works with the many companies and individuals that sponsor his day in the park (including fireworks and sky jumpers!), movies in the park, baseball teams and more! He is a working politician that I can also call a true friend,,,many of you have met him on our side of town also supporting our South Central Sportz Opening Day and Port City Links Health, Education, Science Fair and Carnival each year from year 1 (we are having our 10th anniversary of the Health Fair in Sunnyside March 28th - come by to see us at 10am and then head on to Sylvester's event at Minute Maid - details below!)

Below is an email from Sylvester...
Today I am announcing my
candidacy for Mayor of Houston. I would be deeply honored by your vote.
I am running for mayor
to bring more opportunities to Houston’s middle class families – because
Houston works best when it works for all of us.
We all need smoother
streets. But we also need to build better roads to the future for so many of
our young people who lack the skills to get good jobs and the financial ability
to attend a four-year college.
I know we can do both.
That’s why I intend to
launch a new Road to the Future initiative, to give young Houstonians a
combination of vocational and life skills they need to become employable and
on-the-job training repairing Houston’s streets and roads.
And that’s just the
start. With your help, we can improve our roads, make
our neighborhoods safer, support our public schools and give working people in
Houston a better chance to get ahead.
Please mark your
calendar for our campaign kickoff at 11:00 a.m. on
March 28 at Minute Maid Park. Click
here to RSVP or get more information.
Houston is a great city
– and, together, we can make great things happen. Please join our campaign.
Thank you.
Warmest regards,
– Sylvester
