Damien Sneed, Award-Winning Recording Artist Speaks at Emancipation Conversations
Lecture Series at Emancipation Park during Black History Month
Dr. Jason Oby, Chair of Texas Southern University Department of Music Moderates Tour Discussion
HOUSTON, TX – Damien Sneed, an award-winning recording artist speaks at Emancipation Park Conservancy’s
second Emancipation Conservations Lecture Series during Black History Month. The event, in partnership with the
Society for Performing Arts and sponsored by Shell and Texas Southern University, will be held at Emancipation
Park Cultural Center on Monday, February 10, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. with Dr. Jason Oby, Chair of Texas Southern
University Department of Music as moderator.
This year, Mr. Sneed embarks on a 36-city North American tour, We Shall Overcome: A Celebration of Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr., in celebration of the 35th Anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which was signed into law
and made a federal holiday in 1983. Inspired by the words and action of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mr. Sneed’s We
Shall Overcome tour showcases repertoire from across the African American music traditions that electrified
generations of civil rights activists and defenders with interwoven spoken word from Dr. King’s recorded speeches.
“We are thrilled to celebrate Black History Month with Damien Sneed for a behind-the-scene conversation about his
significant work,” said Ramon Manning, Emancipation Park Conservancy, Board Chairman. “His production and
tour highlights pioneering artists and musicians from past and present generations while providing a great
educational experience for the community.”
The tour stops in Houston this Sunday, February 9, 2020 at the Wortham Center. Tickets for the show can be
purchased on the Society of Performing Arts website. Join Emancipation Park Conservancy and the Society for
Performing Arts the following day for an intimate conversation with Mr. Sneed about his amazing production. Free
tickets are available.
Emancipation Conversations Lecture Series provides a platform to foster invigorating, inviting and transformative,
interactive conversations surrounding the African American experience. The discussions feature innovative iconic
community leaders, influencers and humanitarians across various disciplines including the arts, literature, business,
science, philanthropy and politics.
