Houston Public Works Announces Spring Events to Help Community
Save Water and Save Money on
Water Bills

HOUSTON Houston Public Works is hosting several events to highlight ways to save water and save money on your water bill, including events to learn how to fix common water leaks at home.

More than a trillion gallons of water are wasted every year in homes across the country, and 10% of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons of water or more per day. Fixing the most common water leaks can save customers about 10% on their water bills.

FIX-A-LEAK WEEK: MARCH 20 – 24

The City of Houston is teaming up with the cities of Dallas, Fort Worth, Tarrant Regional Water District, San Antonio, Frisco and the North Texas Municipal Water District to teach people how to fix common water leaks in homes as part of Fix-A-Leak Week March 20-24. The FREE virtual events will feature expert plumbers to demonstrate how to make repairs for both indoor leaks and outdoor leaks.

FREE registration for March 21 Indoor Leaks Workshop at 6:00 p.m.

FREE registration for March 23 Outdoor Leaks Workshop at 6:00 p.m.

The media is encouraged to share the links above with the community to participate.

WYLAND NATIONAL MAYOR’S CHALLENGE: APRIL

This April, City of Houston returns to defend it’s “Water-Wise City” title in the Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation. In 2022, Houston took home the top price for populations above 600,000 with the most individual pledges to conserve water. Throughout last April, the Houston region pledged to save 60.2 million gallons of water. We must top that number by 10% to win the challenge for a second year.

Last year, one Houstonian won free utility bills for a year. The community also selected the Houston SPCA’s Wildlife Center to win a new Toyota Highlander.

New this year, students can participate! Classrooms can make water conservation pledges that will support their city’s standings. One school from the winning city will receive 100 pairs of Zenni Remakes™ glasses that help reduce eye damage from prolonged exposure to blue light.

The Wyland Foundation has increased the number of prizes and the odds of winning them. Visit mywaterpledge.com to participate this April.

EARTH DAY HTX SPEAKER SERIES AND FESTIVAL: APRIL 17 – 19

Earth Day HTX is coming to downtown Houston! The three-day event will feature the city’s environmental and sustainable projects designed to make Houston a more resilient city. A Speaker Series (April 17 – 19) will feature panel discussions from local and national experts on cleaner and greener initiatives.

A festival will be held in front of city hall on April 19 between 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. with activities, displays, food and interactive booths. Houston Water will highlight programs during both events. Visit the Earth Day HTX website to learn more.
