Help your
business grow while helping Houston’s talented youth gain employment this
summer
Dear Corporate
Partner:
Last week Mayor
Sylvester Turner announced Hire Houston Youth, his new initiative to
provide summer jobs and internships to young Houstonians ages 16 to 24.
The mayor has kicked off the program with a guarantee of 450 jobs at City
Hall, City parks, libraries, and other facilities. Mayor Turner is
calling on our business and community partners in the city to add to
provide as many summer jobs and internships as possible for our young
Houstonians. Businesses can partner with the City of Houston by hiring a summer
youth, sponsoring a summer job or internship opportunity, or donating
directly to the program.
Hire
Companies that
partner with the City to hire a summer youth commit to paying him or her
at least $8 an hour for 32-40 hours a week for 7 weeks. Summer youth
begin employment on June 20, after receiving workforce training the week
prior, beginning June 13. Hire Houston Youth screens applicants and
matches your company with the most talented youth that meet your specific
qualifications. To take advantage of the program, companies are asked to
pay a $500 administrative fee per summer youth.
This fee covers:
- Temporary staff to screen, process, and match
youth to employer work sites
- Background checks for selected candidates
- Interviewing event (employer participation is
optional)
- 2-day job readiness training, which includes
workplace dress and etiquette, effective communication, financial
literacy and more
- METRO Q-Cards loaded with 2 weeks of transit
fares
- Career Coaches who serve as liaisons for both
employers and interns
- End of program event
Sponsor or
Donate
Companies who
are unable to directly hire a summer youth can contribute by sponsoring a
summer youth with a $3,000 pledge or by making a tax-deductible donation
to Hire Houston Youth. Your $3,000 pledge covers all associated expenses
in hiring a summer youth to work in a city department or with an
organization that is unable to fund an intern.
I look forward
to working with you to implement this bold, new initiative to empower our
youth.
Sincerely,
Juliet Stipeche
